mlk statue

does anyone else think they missed the mark with the weird stalinist 30 foot emerging from granite statue theme?

i'm a fan and think this was way off target. the abbreviated quote that makes him sound like a drunk jackass posting on derby trail is the least of the problems.

the whole concept seems in opposition to his life.

i think the statue was inspired by his quote:

with this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.

a shortened version of the quote is on one side of the statue.

Yes. I was kind of shocked by it. Although people who know him, say it's good, in that when you stand at the base of it, it does look like, feel like him.

Yeah, the Drum Major quote truncation was stupid.

the misquote is the least of the problems thematically.

it's the arm's crossed embedded in granite.

who's the man who won't cop out when there's danger all about? king! can you dig it?

it would be an awesome isaac hayes tribute.

Well, no statue can ever capture the essence of this great great man...the fact that there is one gracing our landscape is the important thing.

i agree that a memorial to mlk is something that should "grace our landscape". i just don't see the severe figurative depiction rendered doing that.

the vietnam memorial manages to communicate despite having "three servicemen" glued on it's ass.

mlk is one big "three servicemen". the subject deserved better.

i remember tho when the vietnam memorial was first chosen. people were horrified. of course that whole perception has all changed. maybe once the mlk memorial is finished, and some time has passed, it will also become more accepted.

Hold up that's not a rev run statue?

my miss storm cat 01-16-2012 01:47 PM

It's awful in a lot of ways.

Has a Stalinesque look to it.
