Care continues for seized Sabine horses

NEAR MANY — The last 13 in what were dozens of malnourished race horses seized by court order Friday were removed Monday afternoon from the property of a man accused of not providing adequate care, leading to the deaths of perhaps 25.

But there's still plenty more work to do, Sabine Parish Humane Society President Larry Kelly said Tuesday, as the task of feeding and sheltering the surviving horses continues, as does preparations for criminal prosecution of the man accused of allowing the animals' deterioration. And in addition to the horses, dogs, goats and hogs are being seized this week.

Just off the phone with Donna Keen. She will be on ATR in the morning (9:15a ET).

The situation on this 400 acres farm has not even been characterized as graphically or as horribly as what was encountered. Horses were eating dirt and bark for several months to survive. As many as 120 were believed to be on the property and 63 are currently being attented to, so it's believed that as many as 50 simply died where they fell in recent months. Carcasses were strewn all over the property.

Complaints had been coming in since November and local authorities -- including the overwhelmed local Humane Society -- appear to have been protecting or trying to 'assist' the farm owner. Not until some photographs leaked out was there active movement to sieze the animals.

There appears to be a number of rescue groups stepping forward to take animals well enough to be moved. Those that are being nursed back to health are the priority for Mrs. Keen and 'Remember Me' and whatever people can do to help raise the $450/day for feed will be appreciated. (That number does not even include the vet services that are necessary.)

Anyway.. more tomorrow and thanks to those who have already donated.

NO pictures are on the link above.

Despite round the clock medical care with LSU Equine Vets and staff, 3 of the babies have sadly died at the Folsom Farm that took them.

I am going to Folsom, LA tomorrow to help care for 4 horses with pneumonia.
LHRA is also looking for volunteers to help provide scheduled care for these horses.

And Remember Me Rescue reports they are on route back to Texas with 4 other horses.

That's great. Now if they'd only challenge other tracks to match their donation imagine how much could be raised...

Yes it is a dog coat, the owner of the facility's daughter went and got it for her right after she was born. Deb we have dogs bigger than her.:(

While they, momma and baby, are still at great risk, they are doing pretty well given the circumstances and Dance Recital did drop her milk so she is able to nurse tiny Jewel.

We believe the worst of the emaciation is over and have not lost any horses for the last couple of weeks. 2 of the 4 I was caring for did succumb to starvation, it was just irreversible. However the surviving 2 were re-united with their herd about a week and 1/2 ago. There was great joy in the herd, galloping in the pasture, something we had never seen from these horses. They are still at pretty significant risk for the next 5 to 6 months, and the rain rot on these poor horses was just abysmal. But their prognosis becomes brighter every week.
