Ghostzapper

Despite being a sensational bust as a stallion ... his offspring put up some of the more surprising numbers from a sire betting stat standpoint during the 2011 racing season.

Ghostzapper offspring posted a 14-for-59 (24% wins) with a tremendous $3.37 ROI as first-time starters. He had debuters who were 2nd at odds of 23/1 and 24/1 as well.

In 2011 -- his offspring compiled 752 starts -- winning 169 races -- for a 24% win percentage and a positive $2.10 ROI

In 2010 -- his offspring had a $1.97 ROI.

As horrible a failure as he's been ... his offspring seem to be winning races somewhere ... and now they're even tough 1st out. Probably explains why I only spend about 3-hours an entire year studying sire stats anymore.

His stud career is so bad that he was left off the "12 Greatest BC Classic Winners" calendar. Black Tie Affair and Unbridled made the cut, though.

His prowess as a sire aside. I was standing on the apron at the sixteenth pole when he won the Classic at Lone Star. Breathtaking.

Precious few if any of the BC Classic winners would have beaten him that day.

Wowzer!!

Zenyatta, Raven's Pass, Wild Again, and Volponi are probably Jan, Feb, March, and April.

I love how Ghostzapper's stallion page leads with:

The clear leader of his crop with an Oppenheim 'ABC Index' of 2.48
Not sure exactly how the "Oppenheim ABC Index" works -- or even what the hell it is ... but there is this.

Mr. Oppenheim also had high praise for Ghostzapper:

"Among those with their first 4-year-olds, there's no doubt Adena Springs' Ghostzapper at $20,000 looks a reasonable buy. He's sired the winners of over $4.9-million this year, including 18 black-type horses (BTH), of which 10 are graded/group stakes horses (GSH). When we did our August 1 APEX run, he had exactly a 2.50 ABC Runner Index, which ranked him third among more than 600 sires with 200+ year-starters 2005-2011, and which means exactly 20% of his runners were at least paying their way. In this world, that's a big number."
The horse stood for 200K and now stands for 20K ... and he got a great collection of broodmares in his first two crops.

20% of his horses prove to be worth more in true value on the track than the meat on their flesh? Great.

I suppose if they get wind of the fact that over a thousand Ghostzapper offspring have started in North America over the last two years -- and they show a profitable ROI on the betting dollar -- maybe they can tout him for that.

Funny, I remember him being horrible with firsters with his first crop.
Seems like he was 1 for 32 at one point on Thoro-graph stats.

Vic, I agree. I was watching the race on the apron as well with Tim Ritchey and JJ, my eyes were popping out of my head. Tim Ritchey, turn to us and said, "He's a sprinter that can go a mile and a quarter". Awesome performance against a real good group.

i think it's good for the breed that he's turned out to be a bust. hate to see fragile horses in the shed. people used to breed to better the horse as a whole-now they just go for speed, speed, speed. soundness be damned.
