Strike the Gold put down..

:(

Strike the Gold, the 1991 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner, was euthanized at Karacabey Stud Farm in Turkey Dec. 13, it was confirmed by the Turkish Jockey Club. The 23-year-old son of Alydar had been the oldest living Derby winner.

Strike the Gold, who was still the leading active stallion in Turkey, fractured his left front pastern Dec. 13 and, after being examined by a team of veterinarians, was euthanized. He had battled laminitis recently, but was still in relatively good health until his injury.

“He was a champion stallion and our top stallion,” said Adem Kutay Yusufoglu, an officer of the Turkish Jockey Club. “He had some problems, but he was still a happy horse until he died.”

Before people get upset, I just thought Loach was a cool part of the Strike the Gold story. When I think of one, I always think of the other.

I do the same with Lustra and Cryptoclearance.

Sad News! His 1991 Belmont with HAnsel was one for the ages. I know Haskin is on tomorrow's show. Please Steve, make him talk about their epic confrontation in the Belmont Stakes!

Here is the race for those who want to see it again:

This could also be a good chance for a Thoroughbred Legacy! Maybe you could have Zito on???

That was a great replay, thanks. Rest in peace, STG.

Bummer...I have a Cortez- Strike the Gold, Chris Antley "Victorious over Best Pal" print hanging in my office.

Great Belmont with Hansel.

I was a big Strike The Gold fan in my days as a pre-teenager. I never missed a chance to try and talk my grandfather into betting on him during his long lasting losing streak.

My grandfather lost money so consistantly on him that he started calling him "Strike The Sh!t" but I could still persuade him that this would be the time that he'd win.

Pretty upset. He's the first Derby winner I ever picked. Great Pimlico Special too. RIP. Could've been back at Old Friends, and I'm sure there was hope he might yet be one day. Michael Blowen gave it a good shot.

Not very many Alydars left alive.

Just saw the other day one of the last good sons of Secretariat died too, in Australia.

I know he was incredibly well-regarded in Turkey. Had sired almost 500 foals there and still has quite a few yet to race.

First one I ever picked too. Later saw Best Pal in the Super Derby, but no winning ticket on him. He was upset by a local hero by the name of Free Spirit's Joy.

I just read on DRF that he had a heart attack, which caused his broken leg.
