Gifts for kids charity

Does anyone know if there is a charity out there where you get matched with a needy family and you buy gifts for the kids and give them to the parents to give to the kids? Preferably local to Chicago.....

Any ideas would be great help because otherwise I have to go to church with my girlfriend and I am really not feeling that at all. I guess they have these programs at churches but I would have to sit through a service and that is maddening to me.

No.

You might call the local food bank, they might be able to help. Another idea would be to contact United Way office.

Also, Salvation Army might have links.

You using EZ Horseplay?

Tom, check and see if there is a local TAAP (Total Action Against Poverty) non-profit agency in your area. They do a lot of good work here in Roanoke.

Tom,
Many churches just have a gift tree in the back where you take the tag and bring back the present at a later date. No need to sit through the service. It's pretty late in the season though, and our gifts are due this week.

Yes. Chicago Sun Times has always had a "Letters to Santa" program that does that. Try contacting them.

Here ya go Tom. Can all be done via email/mail. Though they say all their families have sponsers for 2011, still will take donations and gift cards.

Also St. Sabina, Chicago (Father Pfleger's parish) does the same thing but no website. His email is pastorpfleger@ameritech.net
I'd put something in the subject line as he gets tons of emails and that's the way I'd go.

The sit through the service part is girlfriend related. If I can't find a family to help, I have to sit through a service and then talk to the pastor and all that stuff and let him find a family.

If you need any ideas for next year, the Department of Social Services puts out a list for foster children.
