Wilburn

Why would they rush this horse into the breeding shed??? Did he get injured in the dirt mile? He seemed like he was just starting to become a decent racehorse.

On ATR today Scott Blasi mentioned something about Wilburn wrenching an ankle in the BC Dirt Mile.

You retired him. Norv Turner is immune to jinxes because he is one. My horse would have won by 5 w/o you anchoring him. Wrote is European and not familiar with your powers.

I bet Chicago ML on Monday night and hit for $210 at Belmont today on a $40 investment. I also made the biggest bet of my life on LSU. NO MUSH

probably because he's the first big colt by bernardini, whose fee just went to 150k.

I don't get what Hughes is looking to do. Even though Wilburn is a son of Bernardini, without a significant race record behind him, how much can this horse really command at stud? He hasn't done enough yet to warrant a high fee, and racing him next year probably has a lot more upside (assuming he's healthy) than downside (like a Flower Alley, who probably was devalued by racing as a 4YO). Hughes made a similar retirement of Into Mischief immediately after he ran second in the Malibu Stakes, and that horse only stands for $8500.

i'd imagine he's looking to get folks who don't want to shell out 150k for bernardini. then again, he may also be thinking that he's found another malibu moon...
the upside is that he's won some races and is by a hot sire. the downside would be if he ran him next year and he didn't do well. i guess he figures it's less risky this way?

Done enough

hockey2315 11-11-2011 10:01 AM

I'm pretty sure I heard he got hurt in the BC, but I'm not positive.

And I'm sure the loss took the heart and will to compete out of him as well....
