Claiming Crown moved to Ellis for '07

Not sure if you guys saw this yet.. Canterbury gets it back in '08.

In a related note, there are a number of scenes filmed at Canterbury in the new movie " Factotum ", which is based on a Charles Bukowski novel.

On a completely unrelated note, I just realized that one of the final scenes in "Carlito's Way" takes place at the subway station I go to every day.

I remember seeing the news last year, that Canterbury gets like 7 Claiming Crowns in the next 10 years. I'm not gonna miss it next year. They give you wide open betting affirs most of the time, but I've gotten slaughtered everytime I played it...
I hope Canterbury goes back to racing under the lights on Sat night. They used to do it that way when the track first re-opened. Since then they've been racing at 1:30 on Saturdays. They experimented with a 4:00 Saturday post time in July (in an effort to get more off-track handle generated), but I don't think it worked too well. They should go back to racing at night. Because the claiming crown draws well in terms of attendance, and they would bve going head-to-head with Mountaineer. That in itself should bring out some decent handle.

Instead of running it in 100 degree heat like they had the past two years, they can run it in 105 degree heat at Ellis.

Poor old Bukowski...

I have read everything he ever wrote. He sure was ugly, and liked to talk about being ugly.

The poems are the best, could do without the other

Good point JJ, it's been hot the last few years... but Canterbury has gotten lucky in that it hasn't rained any of the years they've hosted it (at least I think that's the case)...

Round Pen 09-12-2006 03:46 PM

Good for Ellis Park it is nice to see something good happen to the Pea Patch. Lord knows they have been through enough in the last few years with Floods, Tornado's and Fires.

pmayjr 09-12-2006 03:59 PM

True true... It's pretty clsoe to the beginning of their meet, maybe it would be kick-off weekend for them?

Canterbury was a great host for the claiming crown and it was actually a money loser for the track. They have always excelled at promoting the Claiming Crown. They even sceduled there biggest Stakes race of the meet The Lady canterbury on the same day this year. Every time that they have moved to a different track the attendence and handle have declined. I do believe for at least the Claiming Crown they should have a 7 PM post. That in in of itself would probably double the handle. No competition except for a few nighttime tracks on a Saturday night. run during the day and its TOGA Del Mar Arlington and about 10 other tracks that you are competing against for wagering dollars.

It should be at Turfway or somewhere on an all weather surface.

It has only been ran at 1 other track and that was Philadelphia Park in 2002. Just being at Ellis next year will double the Handle. the reason being that Ellis is part of the CDSN and there signal is seen all over the US. Unlike Canterbury where they have a very limited simulcasting of there signal.

pmayjr 09-13-2006 02:37 AM

Round Pen,
Being at Ellis on a CDSN signal will help, but honestly to really be rid of competition, it needs to be run at night. I think Canterbury is still the best fit for it... if it's run at night like the used to run their Sat cards on. Otherwise run it at Mountaineer, or Emerald, or somehwree that will broadcast it at night with less competition.
Eventhough it's gonna be on CDSN because it's at Ellis this next year- it's still run on a Saturday in the middle of the summer. Which means Hollywood, and Belmont, and Delaware, and Monmouth, etc etd etc with be running big races like they alwasy do. Run it at night, and take the competition away.

mnmark 09-13-2006 08:33 AM

I thought that it had been run at other tracks a few times my bad. CDSN network will help and a location closer to the east may also help attract more entries but when it is all said and done you wont find a better host than Canterbury. I believe Scott Lake himself would tell you that.

pmayjr 09-13-2006 02:22 PM

I'm not sure that I agree with that Mark. I swear, being from MN myself, this isn't a homer statement either. They do attract large fields (except for the highest level "Jewel"), and it's a good central location for west coast and east coast invadors to come in.
I'm curious to see where you'd suggest for the event... You can't run it at Belmont with all the other big races they hold... Maybe Arlington? Or Prairie Meadows? Lone Star (do they run that late into the summer though)? Or are you thinking about a place like Mountaineer, Emerald, or Remington, which might not be the worst "night" options?

mnmark 09-13-2006 04:15 PM

Being a Canterbury regular my opinion is biased. To me canterbury is the HOME of the claiming crowm. Move the post to 7 PM and get cooperation from all possible simalcast feeds to ensure that everyone can wager on it. Then promote the hell out of it which they have always done. Make sure if at all possible that each field has 10 entries or more. Then you would double the handle.

That is a part of the agreement of the sale.

disappearingdan_akaplaya 09-13-2006 07:37 PM

i attended this years CC since my trainer and some of his other owners ran 1 in the express, i will say as i did before they treated every1 involved in the CC like royalty(pretty cool to get to sit by and talk with scott lake at dinner the night be4)! the obvious mistake canterbury made was in having hrtv there the previous year, this year they had much better results with tvg returning!
