Slots are for the birds but wow do they goose purses.

Kasept 06-15-2011 12:58 PM

How about this group? Give Charles Town credit. They really are trying hard to gain respect. Was there for the 2010 Classic card and really enjoyed it.

randallscott35 06-15-2011 12:58 PM

It's impressive I completely agree.

There is a lot to like about what they have there and the region as a destination. When I stayed over near the Maryland border after the Classic card, I realized I was close to Antietam and toured the Battlefield. It was a remarkable experience. And then I had breakfast with the Datillios before heading for Kentucky.

I'm there all the time and it's actually a pretty nice casino. The sprint festival card is usually quite good.

JJP 06-17-2011 02:47 PM

I rarely bet on Sat evenings but Colonial and Charles Town have cards worth playing tomorrow night. Kind of surprised Decisive Moment isn't the m/l favorite at the Chuck.

The casino is great if you like sitting at $100 minimum tables. That being said, the racing side features a great buffet, legendary Charles Town mainstay Jeff Gilleas, and freaking outrageous purses for what was basically a bullring five years ago. PEN has done wonders for Jefferson County.

And I've actually seen Fancy Buckles run a couple times in her day - who knew they'd name a stakes race after her?

ETA - the on-site hotel isn't all bad either, and is a quick hop from the casino itself.

slotdirt 06-17-2011 03:29 PM

P.S. - heck of a nice field for the Red Legend, incidentally.

phystech 06-17-2011 04:24 PM

On a daily basis, Charles Town has turned into the home of the $11,000 purse. For a place with slots and table games, their average daily purses suck.

I still remember the days of the $23k+ purses for a $5k claimer, and the 20+ way shakes for a horse - actually won one of those........and it wasn't that long ago.

slotdirt 06-18-2011 09:40 PM

Well, anybody who expected JP's Gusto to win like that, raise their hand. Yikes.

blackthroatedwind 06-18-2011 09:47 PM

That was scary.

we went over last night. races 1-6 were dominated by the favs. 7,8,9 were good close races. 10th race JP's Gusto ran like he lives at CT! a night of pretty good food and racing.

the Terrace Buffet had couple different types fish, shrimp, crab legs. prime rib, ham and turkey carving stations. wide variety of veggies and salads. no menu ordering in the Skyline Terrace on "big race" days.
