4/2: Gulfstream "Oaks Day" (1st-12th)

Frustrating Friday as some unfortunate decisions cost me at most turns. Had the right idea in the Gulfstream feature, as Upgrade indeed had a perfect trip (at 5-1) and the outside prices -- Sunshine Rambler 3rd at 24-1 and Sayif 4th at 12-1 -- ran big. But no was stopping the Clement import Right One in his first North American start, as he ran everyone down while setting a course record of 1:26.91 (91 Beyer).

At Oaklawn, chalk marched through the first three legs of the quad before goofy 22-1 shot upended the ticket. Along the way, I did nab a decent $56 exacta ($1) when 44-1 overlay Walker Bay got up for 2nd behind even money fave Ha Ha Tonka in the MSW 8th. (The Lawyer Ron sister Too Shy Shy debuted 5th, beaten a dozen lengths.) Finally at Santa Anita, firster Closer to Love in the 4th and Saravas Wild Again (In a 4 horse photo) in the 6th, spelled the difference between success and failure. The good news came in the 3rd -- Fandino ticking a $57 tri -- and the 5th, when Red Alert Day, Hughesy and Sir Dave produced the $82 score.

Overall, lost more than $300 on the afternoon, when I thought it was a day that I expected to be pretty productive. Hope you did OK and are excited about a big weekend at Gulfstream!

gulf race 4....

Lets try...
20 win 4

How about that? Perfect Sting's 5yo daughter debuts a winner and looks good doing it. And let go at 18-1. Will be interesting to see how Attfield handles her AND her undefeated 3yo sister...

As has the little sister in both her wins.. But, to their credit, they both exhibit nice propulsion when called upon. Let's see what happens when they are in more challenging spots and things don't go their way. They may be that good. It's pretrty funny to have a 5yo break her maiden a month or so after her soph sis.

Their 7 year old brother, Perfect Bullet, is in the 11th race tomorrow at Gulfstream too

The truly amazing thing is how we seem to end up on the same horses that get nightmare trips. Now she'll be 8/5 next time because her trouble was so obvious and it makes it difficult to bet her back.

The DRF chart gives a full and detailed explanation of her trip, so even those that didn't see it will know about it.

I was on this horse in her American debut back in January, when she got a terribly troubled trip in a race she was loads the best. Then Mr Pugh decides to put this maiden in a 1 7/16 allowance race, where she got a wide trip to nowhere. He scratched her a week ago when she drew the rail, one can only guess as to why, and then the nightmare of nightmare's yesterday. Many turf horses seem to find trouble frequently, because of the way the races are run, and not having that "turn of foot" to extricate themselves from tight spaces. I have no idea if she is one of those or not, because she hasn't had a chance to prove it yet, one way or the other.

wet one

you watch thousands of races and every once in a while you see a ride that you claim is the worst one you have every seen. well wet one's ride might just be that. between win money and a one number pick 3 i hate to think how much that ride cost me.
