Are they not learning? (Jockey's)
Does anyone have a good explanation to this statement?
Since Bailey, Day and Stevens retired, it seem that even the top jockey's in the country had lost the skills in having a good clock in their head while riding. Today I saw several jockey's lose races from either moving too soon or moving too late. This is becoming the norm. Rajiv Maragh had a lone speed horse on the yielding turf at Gulfstream...instead of walking to a crawl on a boggy turf course. He decided to burn through fast fractions. Cornelio Velasquez who rode who I thought was the winner in the Tobbogan rode himself out of a win by riding directly into a small pack of horses on the rail when his horse was closing in deep stretch. Everyday I am watching horses getting questionable rides at the bigger tracks and it seems to me, most of these horses has the talent to win the races....but the riders are helping them to lose instead of helping the horses to win. |
Here.
http://nara.kctcs.edu/ Go for it and lets see how well you do making split second decisions at how many miles per hour (?) performing the only job I can think of where an ambulance follows you all day. Some of them suck, most of them try really hard. They're there to win. I don't have the answer... I just wanted to add a little fairness here. |
Rajiv rode a hopeless 15:1 speed horse that ran off on him and Cornelio Velasquez was in a bad position behind a horse that has a well earned reputation for lugging out very badly and was actually lugging out badly. Unfortunately for him, when he commited to moving inside, Fastus Cactus stopped drifting, and he got screwed. It happens. These are split second decisions that happen every day and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Victim of circumstance.
Believe it or not, riders rode poorly when the riders you named were around....including Pat Day who blew many a big race. |

What the $@*% that got to do with my question? I fought in Iraq and had to make quick decisions and wished I had an ambulance around. |
I'll kill you in Goldeneye, son.

back to the question, I usually give the jocks the benefit of the doubt based on reasons already given. In the case of Cornelios ride though I must agree. He seemingly was already on the outside and was in the stretch. If he just stayed there or at that point even went a bit wider it would of made alot more sense than diving down behind the the small wall of horses . Cornelio doesnt seem to be progressing as many thought he would

Anyone who truly believes riders have clocks in their head, has rocks in their own.
