Calder Date Request: Year-round racing

http://drf.com/news/calder-would-rac...equest-granted

3 days a week, a few Monday's...

DRF: Calder Race Course has responded to Gulfstream Park’s decision last week to apply to the Florida Division of Business and Professional Regulation for racing dates in December 2011 by announcing their intention to race year-round in 2011-2012. The December dates traditionally belong to Calder.

Hialeah will most likely benefit from this battle by just sitting tight and patiently let these two kill each other.

Does anybody here know the first thing about Florida racing? It doesn't seem like it, repeatedly.

Why people are obsessed with the idea that the long dead past (Hialeah) is somehow going to magically rescue racing in Florida? There hasn't been a relevant horse race at Hialeah in 15-20 years. Who was the last Triple Crown race winner, or BC winner, to race there?

<crickets chirping>

Moreover, the idea that Calder is going to run year round is a joke--outside of the casino, the place is a morgue now except on a very few days. It is sad--I practically grew up there. But right now, under CDI, horse racing is not a priority, and that is unlikely to change. Calder would get killed running head to head with GP. It already reminds me of a dog track.

I greatly hated the old GP getting torn down--I loved that place. But it is not going to get undone. The "shopping/restaurant complex" idea was stupid when it was conceived (before the economy tanked), and is more so now. But, for those 3 months when GP is running, before things thaw out up north(Jan-Mar), it actually works--there is a lot of life and energy there (I don't know how 3 months of life and energy can carry businesses for a whole year, however--the rent must be non-existent).

Looked at objectively, the December dates would be better racing, and have a better economic effect locally, if they were run at GP. It would also help those business at GP, which employ people and generate tax revenue. People spend more money at GP, and it is a more attractive destination for tourists--this is so frigging obvious to anybody who has been here, but I still read the silliest crap to contrary here routinely.

Probably not the hardest thing to do.

I forgot you were a troll--never mind.

Actually a great trivia question...

At a glance, the last Champion that raced at HIA in its' championship year, was Not Surprising, the Sprinter, in '95.

Last TC race winners to run at Hialeah to best of my ability..

DERBY: Spectacular Bid '79 (Flamingo) -- Note: Flamingo winner Thunder Blitz was 4th in '01 Derby
PREAKNESS: Aloma's Ruler '82 (Bahamas)
BELMONT: Creme Fraiche '85

I was there in 2001 when A.P. Valentine broke the track record. He went on the finish 2nd at the Preakness and Belmont that year.

Zito also won a stakes race with Albert the Great on the same day. It was the last T-Bred meet at Hialeah and the last day I attended.

I don't know the answer, but Cryptoclearance never won either a TC or BC race, Bet Twice won the '87 Belmont when Alysheba was going for the Triple Crown.

1985 Belmont winner Creme Fraiche raced at Hialeah in the 1987 Widener and maybe the Hialeah Turf Cup that same year.
