Overheard on Saturday afternoon at Charles Town

So, I'm hanging out in a casino bar watching Auburn-Arkansas, killing time before the Charles Town West Virginia Breeders Classic program, when a group of elderly folks (by elderly I mean in their 50s and 60s) approached the bartender and asked for glasses of wine...

Bartender: We can't serve wine in a glass tonight. No glass at all, in fact. Big night of horse racing, and we are expecting a big crowd. So no glass.

Old Lady: Big night of horse racing? There's horse racing here?

Bartender: Oh yes ma'am. Tonight is the West Virginia Breeders' Cup. Breeders from all over the entire state of West Virginia come to Charles Town, and run in a bunch of races to see who goes on to the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and all those races. ESPN is here, and there is over $2.5 million in purse money tonight alone.

Other Old Lady: Oooooooooh. The Kentucky Derby! I want to go to that.

Bartender: Yeah. It's a big night. If you win tonight you get to go to the Kentucky Derby. So I can give you wine in a plastic cup.

I sat there, said nothing, and could not have been happier that, despite being wrong about 97% of what he said, a bartender at Charles Town actually knew there was horse racing going on.

Nice story. :D

When Smarty lost the Belmont someone, seeing how upset I was, told me not to worry cause he could always "try again next year".

I'll delete it tonight, and won't let it go to my head.

i too, am offended by the suggestion that 50 is old.

it's absolutely correct but stop shoving my face in it.

Look, age is a state of mind. All that matters is whether or not one FEELS elderly.

Let's just say the folks in question were more likely to be found playing slots than horses.

Also, I have many friends who are elderly.
