Here we go again :(

I really am tired of hurricanes. I was hoping we would be spared for a year at least. I think I am getting depressed now.

chupster2 08-28-2006 10:07 AM

It's called "The Midwest". But pick a state that has a nice track!

I have said this before....

California/West Coast....ZERO minutes notice for an earthquake.

Midwest....maybe 2-3 minutes notice for a tornado

East Coast....at least 4-5 days notice for a hurricane.

No question in my mind which I choose.

Buffymommy 08-28-2006 10:22 AM

Problem is that I don't like cold weather. :( I am a picky woman.

Yeah, but tornados go through a lot of unpopulated territory. Also, they are tiny compared to hurricanes. It's a fairly short season, and you can suss out the strips of land they generally plow through. You don't have to leave a 200 mile area but rather, just go to a basement. All in all, I think they are cheaper (time off, evacuation, pet boarding, generators etc. not needed) with a whole heck of a lot less chance of ever getting wrecked by one.

Edited to add, you actually get more like 20 minutes notice, as long as it is daytime.

Buffymommy 08-28-2006 10:27 AM

Not the hurricane itself that bothers me. More the aftermath. No power, crazy drivers, etc... It is friggen hot in Florida right now. I don't know how long I can go without power or more or less how long my long haired German Shepard can go without power. I worry more about him than my husband or myself.

Fair point...but the destruction seen on the news that has been caused by tornados is enough to keep me out of the midwest. A home destroyed is a home destroyed, be it by hurrican or tornado....at least we have time to board up the house, windows, etc and have a chance to keep the damage to a minimum.

*on a more personal note....I refuse to live somewhere that far away from the ocean....just personal preference is all.:D

I am the same Kev. I want to be near the water. I know then this is the price I am going to have to pay to have that.

timmgirvan 08-28-2006 12:41 PM

After emerging unscathed thru 4 big eathquakes, I'll gladly take another rather than face tornadoes or a hurricane!! NO doubt in my mind!

SCUDSBROTHER 08-28-2006 01:55 PM

Kev,you don't think that sauna called St. Louis is the place to be in August?

SentToStud 08-29-2006 08:30 AM

Buffy

You folks ready?

I got the place shuttered up this am. Then the air conditioner started sounding like a garbage disposal! Ugh. But, got enough batteries too run a space ship, enough water and gas, etc.... it looks like 60-80 mph may be coming in this pm.... I hope you and yours are safe ... Keeping fingers and toes crossed.

Working right now and the boss is pumping out the work. Supposed to be closing in an hour, but I think I will be here later than that since I am working for who I am working for. He really is getting on my last nerve today. I am ready to walk out the door.

Going to put the shutters up when I get home. We only have about six windows left to do so it shouldn't take me long. Got all my supplies ready to go.

Good luck to you and yours. I am saying little prayers for everyone in FLorida.

Cajungator26 08-29-2006 11:35 AM

Buffy and S2S

Prayers to both of you guys. Orlando is inland enough to where we shouldn't be hugely affected this time, but I will be praying for you guys.

GPK 08-29-2006 11:37 AM

ya'll be safe please.

Buffymommy 08-29-2006 08:26 PM

Not much in my neck of the woods. Some rain earlier. Hopefully it won't be much by the time it gets here. Kinda dying out now. Just going to get a lot of rain. Only 40-50 mph wind gusts so hopefully we are going to be spared a bit on this one.

Here's hoping we don't lose electricity.

Buffy, what part of Florida do you live in again?

You will be alright in a tornado as long as you're not in a Trailer Park.

Stay safe, Buffy. I used to live in Port St. Lucie/Jensen Beach area. I almost went to the Jupiter campus of FAU. It's nice there.

slotdirt 08-30-2006 11:18 AM

GPK, don't think that the Midwest couldn't get rocked by an earthquake.

Personally, I want a beach home in Maine. Nothing could ruin a summer vacation up there.
