Big class dropping claimers....

Burna Dette, a daughter of Unusual Heat and a winner of 137K lifetime in earnings .. a nice race mare who was 4th in the 125K Irish O' Brien stakes last year was claimed by Doug O'Neill for $25,000 on June 24th.

He runs her back at Del Mar first off of the claim for 16K - and she beats only one.

She's entered at Los Al for a 2K claiming tag on Friday night ...

Breakdown and was claimed.

He did the same thing on Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday horse dead-heated for 3rd and was claimed.

The Sunday horse won by 4 at odds-on and was claimed.

I heard outrage coming from people about this. Los Al's one track I truly don't follow.

You'd think that mare would have a little decent residual value as a broodmare prospect.

The lower-end market for broodmares has probably dropped by about 80% the last 3 years. There are mares out there that were worth around $25k as broodmares just a few years ago and now you'd be lucky to get $5k for them.

What would you say an Unusual Heat daughter that made 137K might be worth as a broodmare?

5 to 8K?

She could be worth a little more than that or she could be worth a little less. It depends what her bottom side looks like. The market is just so dead right now that it's tough to get anything close to a fair price for a broodmare unless it's upper-end. The upper-end market is still ok. Don't get me wrong, the upper-end has dropped but just not nearly as much as the lower-end.

Her dam has dropped five horses - all multiple winners - 3 of the five made at least 100K and one of the ones who didn't was 4-2-1-0 and had some promise. However, none of the five are black type.

Looks like an honest - if unspectacular female family.

As you said, the key is the black-type. For the most part, that's what really matters to people.

The market is so bad right now, that you literally can't give away some of these mares. There are mares that you might have been able to get $7k for a few years ago and now you'd have a hard time getting someone to take the horse for free.

i'm glad someone picked up on this.

i watched the race live and she didn't run a step and broke down very soon after the start and threw dealba over her head.

very sad and smells fishy to me.

then i saw doug o'neil listed and made me wonder why is this horse here? after looking at the los al stats I noticed he has not had any horses here all year.
http://www.losalamitos.com/Admin/pdf...bred_stats.pdf

does he really need a check (7,400$ purse) that bad?

also...he also had a horse named Back Nine Doc run 3rd on saturday nights los al card. she made it out Ok.

Hey they got that 2k! Well after shipping and paying the jock and prerace, etc they got $750!

But I'm sure the "authorities" will be investigating this....

If she was made well she might have been worth 3 or 4k for someone who bred to race.
