Unemployment Benefits

Obama makes his case

"We need to extend unemployment compensation benefits for women like Leslie Macko, who lost her job at a fitness center last year, and has been looking for work ever since. Because she's eligible for only a few more weeks of unemployment, she's doing what she never thought she'd have to do. Not at this point, anyway. She's turning to her father for financial support," Obama said in his speech.

Macko was once employed at ACAC Fitness and Wellness Center in the Albemarle Square Shopping Center. However, in April 2009, a month after being found guilty of prescription drug fraud, she lost her job as an aesthetician in the spa at ACAC.

CBS19 learned Thursday that Macko, who appeared in the Rose Garden with President Barack Obama on July 19, has had more than one run-in with the law. In June of 2007, Macko was charged with grand larceny. The charge was reduced in court to petit larceny, and she was sentenced to two years probation.

Point well made once again :zz::zz::D:D

Do all the who are unemployed deserve unemployment benefits? My question for everyone is does a person who is getting unemployment benefits who is not trying to find a job really deserve these benefits? The other day on the news there was a person saying why should he find a job when he can make more money collecting unemployment benefits. If they are actively trying to find a job then yes they deserve to collect unemployment benefits. The one's who aren't looking for a job are just wanting that free ride. The one's who were layed off that have families to support my heart goes out to them.

you get benefits because you lost your job. it's my understanding that there are requirements that you seek employment in order to qualify for continued benefits. but, the fact remains, if you hadn't been laid off, you wouldn't be unemployed. some may not deserve it, but RIF's or closures mean you are eligible.
i found out i'm eligible. i haven't filed for them, i'm hoping to find work. i've never drawn unemployemnt in my life, and would rather work then take benefits. but if i don't find something in a few weeks, i'll file. i'm not going in a hole.

The big problem with UI is that you can't collect UI while working and exceed the maximum benefit rate. If you are getting $450 a week in UI you could collect that $450 a week and sit home or work 40 hours a week at Walmart and make $300 while collecting $150. Anyone is going to take the sitting home option in that scenario. Change the system so that if you take that job at Walmart you can collect $300 in UI while earning $300 and suddenly there is incentive to take that job. And the taxpayers are saving 33% on the deal while the person is at least contributing (very minimally) to society.

I do understand the argument for UI. Give the rich more money and they probably save or invest it. Give the unemployed money and that money goes directly back into the economy as they pay their bills and living expenses with it. At the same time I think the system has made it far too easy to sit back and collect your checks while not doing everything in your power to get a job.

Best of luck in your search for work.

Well at least they've got some extra money to keep paying them now that they're planning on cutting food stamp aid. Unbelievable.

yeah, it's because of obama that i got this job....i'll be sure to send him a thank you note. i hadn't been out of work in over 12 years, was an odd position. but, that's what happens when you give notice and don't have something else lined up right away.
