It definitely would of been a piggish move. But at least they would of acquired him via trade having to give up highly reguarded prospects. As opposed to what is most likely going to happen this off season when they just flex their muscle and open their wallet to give Lee more than any other team can/will.
Why should they care about competition? Their goal is to win the world series every year by any method available. Is the system flawed? Absolutely. Should there be some sort of salary cap, probably. But there isn't and until then everyone should expect the same sort of tactics by the biggest bully on the block. But remember that it doesn't always work. They have spent tons of money on guys that have frankly sucked.
I just finished the Joe Torre book and the biggest thing I took out of it was how bad the starting pitching staff really was from 2004-2008. As opposed to the staffs that won them the tittles in their run. They got back to that last year and look where they ended. It's no secret, you can never enough pitching (especially for those short 5 game ALDS series).
I guess the bottom line is that will continue as long as the current system stays in place and with the baseball union being the strongest one in the world, no one should expect any sort of change anytime soon. They are the richest team and want to win, why should they care about any other team?
