Broodmare of the year dark horse sleeper?

I nominate a daughter of Housebuster named Calculating Lady for this honor. She wasn't much as a race horse, she made just one lifetime start and was beaten 40 lengths and regestered a Beyer of -0.

However, as a broodmare, she's been rock solid.

* first foal: Calculating Man (sired by Cozar) was 2-for-2 lifetime on synthetic tracks. Won an alw race at Turfway Park at 6/1 - and ended his career with a 93 Beyer win in a 54K alw race win at Keeneland in track record time at 33/1 odds. Sadly, died after the race.

* second foal: Calculating Jimmy (sired by Cozar) He's made over 142K in earnings and just missed winning a 39K alw race tonight.

* Third foal: Call Me Cal (sired by Cozar) Broke his maiden in a MSW race at Presque Isle at 32/1 odds ... he's made over 100K in earnings.

Breed the worst you have (or in this trainers case - everything you have) to the rare ungelded former 5K claimer turned best house sire you can afford - and get runners.

Using this criteria I nominate Baederwood sire of the year for 1990

Did he get a lot of runners from terrible looking broodmare prospects?

I actually think if someone asked Paul McGee about the worst claim he ever made in his life .. I think he'd have to say Cozar. He took him for 50K .. and just two months and two races later dropped him in for 5K and the horse was way up the track for a nickle.

He was a "teaser" for someone, I'm not sure who. Perhaps his breeder E.P. Taylor so i would guess when he finally got his chance he likely had pretty decent mares. It's been so long ago I don't remember the details but there was a gelding he sired in '83 named Miracle Wood who won stakes in Maryland.

Miracle Wood was evidently a "mistake" so to speak and Baederwood got a full book 2 years after his son became successful on the track. Someone out there may have more precise details but that's the way I remember it.
