AmTote statement on Twin Spires, Xpress, AP, FG 'lockup'

May 1st 2010 Oregon Incident

This is a preliminary technical report of AmTote International’s May 1, 2010 service outages on the Oregon Hub. The first outage occurred from 14:11:18 until 14:19:07 PDT. The second occurred from 15:08:56 until 15:21:50 PDT. In both cases, the service outage was caused by a controlled system shutdown and restart which was required to reset the system because a key software component became locked due to transaction volumes.

AmTote has identified a remedy to this locking issue and the remedy will be implemented no later than May 4, 2010. In both cases, AmTote has not identified any wagers occurring after pool close on races hosted on the Oregon hub. No other AmTote hub facilities were affected by this locking issue.

AmTote conducts rigorous testing of all software it deploys including a volume stress test which was conducted on the Oregon system prior to May 1, 2010. This stress test did not identify any issues with the system. The software version running on the Oregon hub had been in place for 28 weeks prior to May 1, 2010, with no issues occurring.

Xpressbet Statement

NETWORK FAILURE CAUSES OUTAGE

A network failure at AmTote's Oregon wagering hub Saturday, May 1 caused severe technical and customer service problems for XpressBet and many other entities including TwinSpires, Arlington Park and The Fair Grounds.

While this problem was beyond our control, we recognize the negative impact the network failure had on horseplayers nationwide during Kentucky Derby Day--the biggest day in racing. We apologize for any inconvenience and frustration the outage may have caused and promise necessary measures to ensure continuous reliability.

Xpressbet told people that bets weren't made (bet unsuccessful-error 3,) but took money from account balances (bets were made, but bettors didn't know that.) So, obviously people bet much more than they had planned to bet. I think I tried the same little $12 bet 5 times (4 times at Xpressbet, and once at TVG.) At no time was there any indication that I had successfully made a bet at Xpressbet. The bet was successfully made at TVG. I was surprised (actually not that much..they are so poorly run) to see that XPRESSBET HAD CHARGED ME FOR 2 OF THE BETS IT TOLD ME I HADN'T MADE. Only after I threatened to go on ATR, did they give me back the money. Like I said on another thread, this was a stupid $12 bet I made for my mom. For some reason, I wasn't into betting. I doubt they would of given back $300-$1000 etc. It doesn't take long to get a large total going. If somebody had a $200 wager, they could easily try it 2-4 times before giving up trying to make the bet. Some play $1000 p6 bets. That could easily have gotten to 3k-5k. If they didn't give the money back, I would of gone on ATR (if allowed to,) and talked about it. I was lucky that it was only $24, but that's not the point. The point is that Xpressbet is poorly run, and this should never have happened. Not being able to make a bet? That happens. This other stuff happened because Xpressbet is crap.

Excellent points, Scuds.

I recently switched to Twinspires (mostly because they have video for IPhone) and much prefer it anyways.

Xpressbet lures people back with a free $50. That's my only excuse for even being on that site. Far as Johhnny D goes. Well, the team drops the baton too often. He can make it seem like it's rare, but it's not.

Your right. I used it on Oaks day and hit the OWD triple. Funded the account for $60 on Friday and used all of it. Went back on Sat nite to withdraw my $375.00. Won't let me until 6 DAYS after my initial deposit. That is crap. I will stick with Twinspires. I never could get xpressbet's video to work either.

This is an example of Am Tote 'Fuzzy' logic. 'Rigorous' quality control testing is supposed to catch these types of errors. It follows that:

1) Am Tote did not test the software or
2) Am Tote did not thoroughly test the software

If anyone here bets is a similar careless manner they lose money. Am Tote gets away with an explanation. And they get paid. Now, that's 'fuzzy' ****.
