Dubai criminals doing their usual fine job of Derby prepping

Vale of York, Midshipman both ailing
By Steve Andersen

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Injury and illness will prevent the last two winners of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile from starting on Saturday's Dubai World Cup program at the new Meydan racecourse, Godolphin Racing announced on its website over the weekend.

Vale of York, the winner of the 2009 BC Juvenile, suffered a bout of colic over the weekend, and is out of Saturday's $2 million United Arab Emirates Derby. Midshipman, the winner of the 2008 BC Juvenile, suffered a recurrence of a soft-tissue injury last week and was declared from the $1 million Godolphin Mile last Friday.

Vale of York's illness has left his short-term racing future in doubt, according to Simon Crisford, the racing manager for owner Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin Racing. In a six-paragraph statement on Godolphin's website, Crisford said plans for Vale of York are unclear.

"Unfortunately, Vale of York has suffered from colic and will not be able to run in the UAE Derby at Meydan," Crisford said in a statement. "We hope that Vale of York makes a full recovery soon, but obviously right now, all future plans are on hold for him."

Well so far in the last two years Godolphin has had the following 3YOs who had previously started in America in Dubai for the winter:

Midshipman
Vineyard Haven
Regal Ransom
Desert Party
City Style
Girolamo
Vale of York
Tahitian Warrior

Only two of these horses even made it to the Ky Derby starting gate and we all know how they did. Their record of preparing 3YOs in Dubai is not good.

Midshipman went bad last year but did run well on the return. Regal Ransom and Girlamo were productive 3yos. Vineyard Haven won a couple of good races.
The ones they have this year were no-hopers anyhow. They ran Tahitian Warrior at 9f on grass last time.

I would rather that these horses stay in the US with either McLaughlin or Albertrani or Rick Mettee, but when you look at the promising 2yo's of the last 20 years and how few made the Derby, they are about on par. last I knew it wasn't "criminal" to send horses to to bad trainers. It happens in the US every day.

I get that but the criminal part still escapes me.

If I gave Bob Baffert 1/10th of the money these thieves have hopelessly squandered on their Derby quest in the past dozen years or more, he would have won at least 5 of the past 10 Derbies. And I put the over under on Pletcher and Zito at two--that's how hopelessly inept Dubai Inc. is. Their Derby ROI would embarrass Bernie Madoff.

And if you still don't understand how these characters are arch-criminals by now, rehashing the issue, again, is not going to faze you. There is no cure for willful obliviousness.

How are these guys criminals again? They stole somebody's horse(s)? They paid good money for the horses they bought (you can argue that they paid more than they should). The previous owners of these horses could have said no and not sold thier horse to dubai and give it to Baffert to train but the dollar sign speaks volume. If they want to "squander" thier money then its thier choice and thier money thats being squandered -NOT YOURS or MINE. Why must you put your two cents in commentary about thier financial decisions?

If they could not produce derby contenders then they must work on it. Other than 3yo derby prospects, you can say they earned thier due in Europe, Asia, N. America etc. in all other G1 races.

I still miss West Side Bernie.

I can think of thousands of people in Kentucky who have a much different view of Godolphin, and specifically, Sheikh Mohammed...and the word criminal is quite possibly the exact opposite...more like, oh, savior.

You have been asked what 4 or 5 times to clarify your statement and this is the best you can do? Your answer is absurd.

Yeah, you can buy respectability, no problem, in this country.

You should have been in Miami in the 80s (I was)--bags of cash showing up everywhere: banks, car dealerships, realtors, you name it. It was all respectable. Everybody smiled and was happy.

I don't mind whores so much, so long as they are not hypocrites.

Dubai Inc. serves as the banker and money launderer to some of the worst scum of the earth, just as the "respectable" Swiss were during WWII (and, really, pretty much all of the modern era).

But since they take a fraction of their profits and dribble it down to a bunch of inbreds in Kentucky, who, in less than 50 years, have managed to breed the thoroughbred into a fragile, stamina-lacking animal that bears little resemblance to its noble ancestors, everything is just "great".

Hooray, time to waive the flag. We love you, saviors.

Wipe your lips when you get off your knees.
