i would not say that. they will probably make it this year but if something does not happen soon. this is about to get ugly (worse than it already is). if nyc otb goes under owing them all this money, its gonna get worse, believe me. the state claims to be broke but they sure are not moving with any urgentcy.

booner 03-13-2010 08:05 AM

It would be shocking to see Saratoga not run, but with the limited things I have read about the situation in NY, it could become a reality.

It really is sad that states with smaller tracks can keep running, but people are worried about the nation's most lucrative meet being shut down. Just doesn't seem right......

If the state doesn't do something with the VLT's then NYRA will start to look more like the Maryland circuit and the better horses and horsemen will be moving to the slot tracks with the better purses.

Local TV News on the NBC affiliate now reporting on the potential for no racing at Saratoga this year..

Hoping Andy and Steve will chime in with their educated opinions on this. Either here or on Steve's show Monday.

I realize that possibly the local media may just be looking for headlines/ratings.... but I'm very much surprised that even the possibility of no Spa racing this summer is not getting more play here at DT.

TheSpyder 03-13-2010 09:01 PM

WTF....How much can we take? This can"t happen

pointman 03-13-2010 09:04 PM

This is really nothing more than a cry from the Breeders to the inept NY politicians that they expect the State to live up to its agreement now that these idiots found another way to screw up the bidding process. The State will most likely live up to its obligations but wait until the last possible second when NYRA has just about nothing left, but it is really hard to believe there will be no Saratoga meet.

parsixfarms 03-14-2010 07:27 AM

The political situation is dire, but I can't envision anyway the Saratoga meet doesn't happen this year - if for no other reason than the fact that I received my season tickets for the Spa on Wednesday.

It isn't getting more play because it's a non-story. It has been developed by serial irresponsible hack Paul Post, who writes for the embarrassing Saratogian and gets picked up by the Thoroughbred Times. He is a guy who couldn't adequately report on a Spa Catholic-Corinth girls volleyball game, yet is allowed to delight in creating negativity around anything NYRA-related.

In his defense, girls volleyball can be quite complex.
