Bloodhorse letting LaMarra loose

The smart and funny Tom LaMarra has long been a very effective writer/editor at BH, and he's now doing a fresh 'At Large' column. You'll like it... From what I can tell from reading his work and conversing with him, he doesn't get many things wrong.

The recent rain-related cancellations at Santa Anita Park have been blamed on its synthetic surface, but a few things get lost in the hysteria. One, the surface was improperly installed, and, two, can anyone prove racing would have been held on those days if Santa Anita had a dirt surface? Just food for thought.

I'm pretty sure Santa Anita wouldn't have cancelled racing because of 2 inches of rain if they had a dirt track ... especially on a saturday card, with several graded stakes races, and a p6 carryover.

Just a terrible take.

I agree this past Saturday probably doesn't get axed, but the reference to 'recent cancellations' (plural) incorporates the previous spate of storms when you'll recall Turf Paradise had to cancel 2 days.

It's hard to believe racing on any dirt track should have to be cancelled because of the kind of rain they got.

A ton of horses would scratch however .

go back to previous years before SA was forced to change to a synthetic surface and see what transpired. this can't be the first time they've ever had such significant rainfall. however, they were made to make the switch, and have had drainage issues since. what a mess-a protracted mess at that, for one track! wonder what is the total amount they've spent/lost because of the change?
