If Calder had Santa Anita's track surface....

...what percentage of its race days would be canceled annually?

I am guessing around 40-60%.

It would be dark most days from late May until mid-October.

What a complete joke, people.

PS:

I love the way the TVG boot-licking apologists act like every rain cloud that crosses Southern California is just cause for ark building. Why can't they just come out and say "We've got a joke of a track here"?

Oh...never mind.

It's the drainage system not the pro ride

I see alot of dirt tracks cancelling today also.

Not from rain.

freddymo 02-06-2010 11:21 AM

The real joke is that one of the most important racing establishments in the world has a drainage system which is incapable of doing its job? Imagine if the air conditioning didnt work in a slot parlor? It would be fixed regardless of cost immediately..

To be fair, a foot of snow or more will close any racetrack, regardless of surface.

tector 02-06-2010 11:32 AM

Putting aside the whole plastic to dirt concern, if I had a top 3YO, why in hell would I keep him in So Cal now if I knew some race critical to my schedule could be canceled if a bird pees on the track?

I don't think FG or GP has ever had to reschedule a 3YO stakes race. OP, maybe--they do get snow and frozen tracks occasionally.

If you live in Cal and have your operations in Cal where else would you go?

tector 02-06-2010 11:42 AM

The article I just read in the LA Times said LA got two inches of rain overnight.

Now for SoCal generally that can be dangerous, because it is sprawled over hills and valleys, so the rain runs off irregularly, leading to mudslides, etc.

But SA is not on a hill or in a ravine or the like. It is on the flats. 2 inches of rain is just 2 inches of rain, just like it would be a Calder or Saratoga. And there are many days Calder takes 2 inches of rain in an hour. Sloppy track--no big deal.

It's not the track its the drainage system.. I dont like poly but the poly isnt the issue if they were at HP they would be running. They will need to replace the drainage system even if they switch back to dirt which we all hope and think will happen.

If you are Sherriff, Sadler, Drysdale are you going to ship your best stock out of town? If you are Wygod/Moss or any number of significant owners are you going to ship to FG or GP?

you just answered, thats why no ones there...they get 4 and 5 horse fields and some of the trainers that stay still hate the track

If they had Keeneland's they wouldn't cancel any dates at Calder. Except for hurricanes.
