PICK SIX CARRYOVER OF $115,261 KICKS OFF NEW YEAR

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 1, 2010)—Due in large part to a 58-1 stunner in race seven, the New Year got off to a raucous start at Santa Anita, as the popular Pick Six eluded 11,695 on-track attendees and as a result, $115,261 will be carried over into Saturday’s Pick Six, which will be offered on races four through nine.

With veteran jockey Paul Atkinson at the controls, longshot Bonita Sonador prevailed by a head in race seven, returning $119.80 to win and thus assured the carryover into Saturday. Conditioned by Robert J. Lucas and owned by Willard D. Thompson, Bonita Sonador, a 3-year-old California-bred filly by Dream Run, broke her maiden Friday in career start number seven.

Friday’s Pick Six began in race five, and it was here that the longshot dye was cast, as Tiz Folly, with Michael Baze up, returned $29.40 to win. Conditioned by Danny Velasquez, the 3-year-old California-bred filly by Tizbud is owned by Judi Partridge.

Race six went to another outsider, as Pinstripe Kid and Victor Espinoza got home on top, returning $19.40 to win. Owned and bred in-part by former Yankee outfielder Irv Noren, Pinstripe Kid is trained by Rafael DeLeon. Noren’s partners on the 4-year-old California-bred gelding are Lavine and Lovett.

Jockey Mike Baze won his third race of the day in the eighth, as he guided Life by RR home, returning $17.60 to win. Conditioned by Doug O’Neill, the 4-year-old Maryland-bred filly is owned by Westside Rentals, Margolis and Sarno.

The New Year’s Day feature was the $100,000 Sensational Star Handicap, which was carded as the ninth race. The Sensational Star yielded a formful result, as jockey Garrett Gomez notched his second stakes win of the afternoon, guiding 13-10 favorite Compari to a 1 ¾ length win for trainer Marty Jones. The 4-year-old California-bred gelding by Redattore paid $4.60 to win and is owned by his breeders, John Nicoletti, Don Valpredo and Harris Farms.

Friday’s 10th and final race was taken by favored Alpine Warrior, returning $5.20 to win with Martin Pedroza up. The 3-year-old California-bred gelding by Swiss Yodeler is trained by Adam Kitchingman. Alpine Warrior was bred by Peter Zinnato, who owns him in partnership with Rustan.

Post time Saturday is set for 12:30 p.m., with the Grade II, $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap headlining a nine-race program.
