I wonder if he got Awesome Maria too?

Probably.

I can't wait for Gulfstream to open.

It seems like Hough and Robsham Stables are no longer together - maybe Hough retired (?) - Bruce Brown seems to have taken a bunch of them.

I was just going to ask that. He had Gold Trippi in the Gravesend last week and he's listed as the trainer for Giant Chieftan tomorrow.

I think Discreetly Mine could end up being a useful sprinter.

I'd lean towards thinking he retired. He's over 70 and I know his wife died last year. . . He had been with Robsham Racing for a while. . .

Too early to tell what his best distance will be.

I expect he will probably be a better miler/router than a sprinter.

Even though he looked as if he was gasping the last furlong of the Champagne? I think he's talented, but I'm not sure he wants to go 1 step past 7 furlongs.

He pressed a pretty quick pace set by Super Saver - put SS away - and came up very tired late.

Would someone conclude that his pace rival he defeated that day (Super Saver) was also a sprinter?

Super Saver went two turns in a Grade 2 stake next out - got no pressure - and sailed to a 5 length win.

How far a horse like that will go boils down to pace and pressure. A one-turn mile can be a pretty demanding distance for a 2yo in Oct if they're asked to run pretty hard the whole way.

Looking at his breeding ... I don't see why he has to be a sprinter. His sire was most effective at 10fs - his dam ran by far the best race of her life at 10fs - his half bro by sprinter Forestry - could stay well enough to bury a field at 9fs in the UAE Derby in just career start #3 that included names like Sympatico Bribon, Invasor, and Well Armed. Yeah, the big names all ran off races - but the time was outstanding and he effortlessly drew off.

Watching Discreetly Mine's maiden win - that's a horse who showed to me that he can relax and finish up strong when allowed to relax. Very few Mineshaft's are better sprinters than routers .. and I've seen nothing in his races to suggest he won't be atleast just as good routing as sprinting.

I agree and disagree... I think he pretty much stinks, but if he turns out to be ok it will be going long, he is tactical enough to the point where he could pull some nice trips in derby preps and end up a bit dressed up.

He stinks? Yes, finishing 2nd in the Hopeful and the Champagne shows he stinks.......

I loved his sire, so believe me I hope that DM can go long. Thanks for explaining your rationale; I'm looking forward to January 9th already.....

He finished second in the Futurity to D'Funnybone, who Dutrow is going to win a Grade I with next year, and I say that specifically because I know you don't like him.

Dude these horses suck. D'Funnybone might be ok going short. I cant see him doing anything over a mile and even that is pushing it. I think most of the really good ones are out west this year, even there Maiden races just seem to be better.

Take off the Baffert goggles.

He didn't retire. They split about 4-5 weeks ago. Hough will be 62 in February.

Wow my math's bad. . . Should've known since he doesn't look that old. That's a shame for him - always an underappreciated trainer and all his horses of consequence lately have been for Robsham.

That is bizarre. Didn't they have some good success together? Day rate to high? lol
