Put-over at Churchill

One of the best put-overs I have ever seen just happened at CD.
A 3yo colt debuting for a debuting trainer (no starts this year) Phillip Jones.
showing 1 slow workout. Sired by Wild Wonder out of a Norbot mare.
50-1 ML goes of at 98-1. Sets right off the speed and draws off like a good thing. Beating Normandruth by a good 5-6 lengths, who debuted with a 83 beyer.
Fwiw, I bet the 2nd and 3rd place horses in a 2 horse exacta box.
I guess it would of been a good time for the ALL on top hedged tri.:D

Just posted in Phil's thread in the selections section.

Kind of ridiculous that things like that are allowed to happen.

Keeneland has a rule that mandates two listed works. I guess CD doesn't.

Seems to be the norm in Kentucky lately

They announced some works. A blazing 4 in 50 from the gate and 5 in 104. Not to mention the horse looked like it shipped in from Alaska.

gotta tip your hats to the connections, this horse was hidden very well and picking the right race to do it in probably took some time and was very well thought out

hats off to the guys who made a score

freddymo 11-05-2009 05:25 PM

Is it possible they didn't realize what they had? I remember being at the track and a trainer comes up to me and a friend and tell us his First time starter didnt fit in the race needed dirt but all they had in the book was turf.. Paid 80 bucks and the trainer didn't have a friggin dollar on the horse!!!

Call me crazy, but how is this a put-over? Wouldn't some people have to know about it, inducing odds a bit lower than expected for a horse with such works?

The breeding, while not well known, isn't atrocious. The sire was a multiple graded stakes winner, set a new track record in a G3 (Longacres Mile at EMD in 1998), and hits with about 9% of first time starters. He is a half to three winners and the dam herself won in her first season.

The connections aren't known - but would you expect an owner/trainer/breeder to be regularly stabled at CD? Certainly not.

Surprising? Yes. A put-over? I don't think it qualifies as such. Didn't bet it and wasn't going to - but I just don't think anything crazy was going on here.

They looked as shocked as anyone after the race. There was around $1100 bet t win on the horse out of a win pool of around $130000.

No one takes any real action on a horse like that.

not true at all chuck , the max payout would have been maybe 40 to 50 / 1 at an offshore book

they could have spread it around a bunch of different one's

This, too, is not accurate. Several of the better offshores now pay full track odds for WPS, but limit the amount you can win in a single race. At Bookmaker.com the limit for Churchill Downs is $30K. Same thing at 5Dimes.com.

There is no way this was a putover.

brianwspencer 11-06-2009 09:20 AM

The horse looked okay on the track too in a race where not a whole lot of them seemed interested in being there, fwiw.

Horse came back to the winner's circle like he would've cleared his NW1X condition if it were the next race on the card. Wow.

so even if i am wrong on a cap of 50/1 and instead they get full track odds how do you know a score wasn't made at an offshore book yesterday?

Connections can get surprised (in a good way). It happens.
