BC Ponders Future Sites

Breeders' Cup brass toured the premises with an eye to returning to Canada – a notion if not unthinkable in the wake of Woodbine's only previous turn, in 1996, then certainly a long shot.

Not anymore, Breeders' Cup president and CEO Greg Avioli's honeyed words flowing like a well-timed Garrett Gomez rally. Avioli praised just about everything about Woodbine. This Winter, he will present the Breeders' Cup board with a plan for approval that would designate a group of 10 North American tracks, including Woodbine, as hosts beginning in 2011, along with the framework of a rotation.

"I would definitely believe you'll see that day, and probably sooner than you might think," said Avioli of a Breeders' Cup return. "The biggest concern you have at Woodbine is going to be the temperature. We're locked into the early November schedule, it fits with our plan very well.

"In terms of the overall quality of the facility, though, there's no reason you wouldn't see multiple Breeders' Cups here in the future."

What's the o/u for how long it takes till Ravioli brain tries to get Woodbine to be the permanent host?

Cannon Shell 10-18-2009 05:59 PM

IMO, Churchill should be permanent host. the temp is usually decent, central location and CD can handle the crowd.

At this point, if it would keep the BC away from synthetics, I'd agree with you.

At least until the Socal tracks get their heads out of their asses.

Or Ravioli gets ousted.

I would say a Churchill-Belmont rotation would be the way to go.

if they want to do synthetics, why not keeneland? it would close thier meet. some of the runners are already there from opening weekend of the meet. same other reason as CD.

Keeneland is too small

If not for the rain, i thought Monmouth was an OK site. Lone Star did a decent job when it was there.

Belmont, obviously has lots of room and albeit the weather can be cold in November its not unbearable. Churchill fits

Agree that Santa Anita should be out, but it is a nice facility there

Not a whole lot of options when you think about it

wapete 10-18-2009 07:36 PM

Churchill, Belmont, Arlington, Gulfstream and Santa Anita

Locked Rotation so each course hosts every 5 years.

I don't know if Gulfstream has enough room for scads of temporary seating they would have to bring in.

booner 10-18-2009 08:04 PM

I would like to see Monmouth get another chance. I really liked it there (other than the monsoon).

Keeneland is looking into additional seating for hosting a BC in the future. But I don't see it in the near future.

Churchill is ideal, and of course I am biased since I live in Kentucky. Being 2 1/2 hours from the BC each year would be really, really nice. But I do like to get out and see other tracks.

at least having a BC at Woodbine will help determine the Sovereign Awards..

Gulfstream is no longer a racetrack

Somebody needs to punch this guy in the face at Santa Anita. There has to be a DTer on the west coast who will take the charge.

Agree with Monmouth. Still the most formful BC day despite the weather.

I vote for Hialeah.

Drat, beat me to it.:)

Now's the perfect time to think about it. They're working on the site and are in a position to make improvements that would benefit them later should they pursue the BC. At the very least they could make sure not to do something that would make it difficult to adjust. Sure CD has it next, but there's no reason Hialeah couldn't put things in motion to get it sooner rather than later.

Honorable mention: Monmouth
