Wilmington, NC Anyone Been There?

Headed down tomorrow morning to look the area over for a place to live and some followup on a job lead.

I own a condo about 40 minutes south of there in Ocean Isle Beach.

Wilmington seems to be a college town (UNCW) with some interesting bars and clubs on Market Street downtown.

I can give you a good deal on my condo, by the way..... 8-)

I went to UNCW back in he early 80's... I doubt that anything I recall of my experiences are even revelant as the place has changed drastically since then.

Downtown has sinced been cleaned up and developed w/ resturants, clubs, etc. Back in the 80's you'd never venture down there, except to snag a couch for your dorm room from the Salvation Army... And even that could be challenging.

The closest beach to the campus is Wrightsville, where what was left of the school population would wind up on the weekends (it was much more of a commuter school back then)

My wife and I have owned land in the Wilmington area for over 10 years. We had strongly considered re-locating to the area but the lack of jobs has prevented our move. It's a very nice port city. Not too big, not too small. The university is a major part of the city as it has grown both in size and reputation over the past decade. But the city has more to offer then a typcial small college town. If you enjoy the water, the beach, golf, and a fairly laid back lifestyle, I think you will like Wilmington alot. If I can offer any help regarding the various communities and different parts of town please let me know.

Good luck with the job prospect.

Been there several times...if you can move there I'd say you'll love it. Kinda far from anything but a real nice town.

I spent 4 days at Ocean Isle beach last month. Beautiful area..stayed at The Islander Inn.

Only been to Wilmington once, back in the late 90's, for a golf tournament. Don't remember much about the area.

My Dad lives in Leland, which is just outside of Wilmington. He loves it...lives in a golf/planned community down there. As someone already said, the area has changed drastically since the mid 80's....good luck.

Magnolia Greens?

My condo is in Bricklanding Plantation. It overlooks the 1st hole of the golf course, which sits on the Intracoastal Waterway. It truly is a beautiful location.

Ok so I just got back early this am from Wilmington. I actually left a couple weeks later then I originally planned. Love it, love it, love it. Love downtown, love the beaches, love the people, love the work opportunities for me, etc etc.. I will break it down later today so those whom have not seen this part of the country can get a sense of how great it is.

And then I gotta share how I got to meet Coach K and talk to him for a good ten minutes.

Oh yeah how could I forget getting "detoured" on the way down with a stop at Cherokee Indian Reservation outside of Asheville.

Thank God they allow U-Turns in the south:eek:

I'll break it down Scavs style once I get unpacked, a power nap and 9 holes of golf in with a buddy.

Really cool deal, he had a book signing at Quail Ridge Books and Music in Raleigh while I was down there. Probably 200, 250 people showed up. His daughter Jamie was there as well who actually wrote most of the book, The Gold Standard (just started reading it, focused on Team USA). They assigned letters to you and then when they called your letter you would go in line. I got F which ended up being the last letter called. When I got to the desk I had two books, one for me and one for my Grandmother who bleeds Duke Basketball. He was very gracious and asked me to hang around for a minute as they were almost done. Coach K took a few extra minutes to write a very nice personalized message in my grandmothers book and then shared with me some insight on life in relation to setting achievable goals and not getting all worked up over the things that don't go right.

Great experience as there were probably 10 people he asked to stay over and he took time to speak with us all.

I checked out the following campus's while I was in the area, NC, NC State, Wake Forest and Duke. All are very unique and special. And damn close to each other. How about that drive from Chapel Hill to Durham, the tree lined route.
