Belmont run-off demolishes Secretariat statue

City On Line, who got loose and ran off before the 5th race at Belmont today, made his way through the tunnel and collided with the famed Secretariat statue in the paddock. The Jerkens trainee appears to have been killed by the impact which reportedly toppled the bronze portion while shattering the marble base.

Poor horse.

smuthg 05-20-2009 03:18 PM

just awful...

Antitrust32 05-20-2009 03:19 PM

:(

That sucks. RIP City On Line

I wish horses would figure out how to not run straight into things. :(

That's terrible hardly seems to cover it. Poor horse. What an awful thing for the folks around the paddock to have to see.

Hickory Hill Hoff 05-20-2009 03:44 PM

Poor thing must have been terrified. I approach every day at the track with so much concern anymore. You just never know what can happen. RIP City On Line

****.

My jaw is still open. That's horrible.

prudery 05-20-2009 06:16 PM

Terrible, bizarre, and tragic ...

A really awful event, and hearbreakiing public disaster ...

I was at Belmont when a horse reared in the saddling enclosure and fell dead with a fractured skull--horrible enough, but not like this ...

I feel for anyone involved with the horse, and all that saw this nightmare ...

randallscott35 05-20-2009 07:52 PM

Holy **** that's nuts. Glad I wasn't in the paddock to see that.

Linny 05-20-2009 08:09 PM

What a horrible event. I'm glad I didn't see it. I was betting that horse online when it happened and a moment later Durkin announced the scratch. I was only partically paying attention to the TV so I had no idea he had gotten loose, I guess I just figured he was a vet scratch.

That's very sad for all involved and certainly frightening for any who saw it happen.

that's really too bad about the horse-what a freakish thing. i'm sure it really rattled anyone who saw it happen. how awful.

At least 200-300 people were still in the back walking ring/terraced area and and club house The horses had just left for the track. The accident happened before the 5th race and the tarps didn't go up for st least 20 minutes. Very upsetting for all there...people were stunned.

All horses et al ,had just gone to the track. Noone was in the walking ring. The horse dumped the jock out on the track(according to eye witnesses) then ran back through the tunnel down toward the saddling area.

I was walking along the clubhouse rail(bordering the path to the track) out in the table/umbrella area. I was heading to the track when I heard that "thunderous pounding of hoofs" and then City On Line ran by me doing at least 30mph. I heard someone scream loose horse simultaneously as City On Line flew by me. I don't think anyone was in the tunnel that I heard. Fortunately.

Horrific thing to see. People were stunned. Very sad. I wish I was somewhere else.

I swear, you think you hear close to everything, and then something like this happens. Nothing but a terrible turn of events.
