I'll let Chuck explain the detailed ins and outs of its' use, but usually Ace positives are not that nefarious. Ace is used to calm a horse down and Roussell may have had him on it as he was working his way back from injury so he doesn't try to do too much, etc.. It was his 2nd start off the injury layoff though when he won, and he was 3 weeks between starts.

It could possibly be construed as a performance enhancer a little as a light dose can help a high strung horse be more composed. The withdrawl on it can be very tricky depending on whether you use IV or oral doses. Louisiana claims a 24 hour withdrawl recco and that is very suspect. New York and California suggest 96 hours and Illinois suggests a week!

If the horse got beat at a short price and had Ace in its system you would have a big issue. It is a very tricky drug as it can linger in a horses system for much longer than normal depending on a variety of factors. Its effectiveness is short lived and if their were more than trace amounts I'm sure the penalty would have been more severe.
