how will the poly horses do in the derby

any thoughts..when churchill tunes up the track on oaks/derby day how will the cali horses do when the first time they run on the dirt its hard as a rock
and they also have to run the classic dist..getting easy graded money out west is fine but it should be a reality check on may 2.if i were training a contender id at least do 1 prep on the dirt..the pamplemoose is going to feel
like hes running on cement..imo

I think eventually some poly horses are going to run big in the derby and as time goes by this factor might become less opinionated,we'll see.

How would turf horses do in the Derby?

sdjcom 04-02-2009 10:45 AM

BB did okay on turf last year

If they win I lose... Until they beat me a poly only winner won't be on the top of my ticket.

Agreed. After the last two years, I'm not going to get suckered into betting another poly specialist in the Derby.

There is no formula for whether a synthetics horse likes dirt.

You have to see them run on dirt before you can draw any conclusion at all. Each horse is going to be different.

Just no way to tell without putting them out there and letting them go. I Want Revenge made the successful switch, at least to AQ, but we won't know about the Santa Anita Derby horses until May 2.
