Obama Administration Loves Foreign Cars

"So now that the Obama White House has taken the reigns from Detroit in running the American automobile industry, it seems only natural to ask: What makes of American cars do members of the Administration drive?

Rahm Emmanuel, for one, seems like a Chevy man. We can picture Timothy Geithner driving a vintage Ford T-Bird, and presidential aide Reggie Love surely rides in a Pontiac G8.

Oh wait. According to Politico, pretty much everyone in the White House drives a foreign car.


A survey of West Executive Drive, where White House staffers park, revealed only five American cars out of 23 --a Dodge Grand Caravan, two Ford Escapes, a Jeep Cherokee and a Cadillac.

The lot was sprinkled with BMWs, Mercedes, Hondas, Toyotas, Saabs, Audis, Volkswagens and a Volvo."

badges on cars are meaningless when it comes to country of origin.

whoever drives the grand caravan is driving a car manufactured outside the u.s. (windsor, canada) so you can add that to the list of "foreign" vehicles.

mercedes, honda, nissan, vw, and toyota vehicles are all built in the u.s.

and there's cross ownership. mazda is partially owned by ford. saab is a gm subsidiary.

that parking lot looks like a cross section of america to me.

Honda, Nissan, Volkswagon etc got bailout money?

they don't have the burden of providing health insurance to their employee's.

If offered they would have rejected it.

You take fed. money, you play by fed. rules.

I really don't blame staffers for driving foreign cars. I probably agree w/them in that that it's a superior product no matter where it is assembled, health care or not.

LOL - Many Toyotas are made right here in Georgetown, KY. The town is hugely dependent upon the factory. As are all the ancillary factories in the US that support this one (parts, shipping, trucking, etc) Pretty American to me.

Who owns toyota again? I really to be honest dont give a crap what they drive just found it funny as in haha , actually dont blame them at all for driving a good quality vehicle .

my bad. i guess i mistaked your hilarious punch-line for being wildly uninformed.

Toyota has taken another week off from car production here in Georgetown (as they are profitable, they plan to stay that way).

However, Toyota is still paying the employees their full wages if they will work this week. Where can they work, if their factory is closed?

Some are doing cleaning, repair and training at the factory.

But the majority have volunteered with a Toyota-sponsored program, and they are shipped out today at a multitude of local non-profits: today the Toyota employees in Georgetown are being paid by Toyota for building houses at Habitat for Humanity, for planting flowers/trees at local parks, etc.

BTW - Toyota employees have repeatedly fought and refused unionization.

Good for them not going Union and it sounds like they dont need one , seems the company is doing a good job taking care of them.

Same thing is happening at the Princeton, IN plant.
