Drape (NYT) on Mafaaz and Medication

Here's another from the NYT.

Thoughts?

If the breeding in this country is so terrible, I guess someone forgot to tell the Sheiks who keep buying up our best prospects at top dollar

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Big Brown receive Winstrol on a monthly basis and his schedule was not changed during the TC? I would hate to think that was twisted to mislead readers.

I would also hate to think that when Mafaaz gets drowned over here this is somehow attributed to him being drug-free, theoretically as opposed to his opposition, instead of the real reason......his complete lack of talent relative to his competition.

I read through it, paragraph by paragraph, and my impression was, "truth - assumption - not true - no support for what is stated as fact - halftruth - truth - wild-assed guess presented as truth", etc.

And, unfortunately, if all drugs were banned tomorrow, certain observations would still be attributed by many to "drugs we can't detect".

at least they were perfectly honest

Can't wait to see L1 next to Mafaaz when he runs here for the Blue Grass or Derby.

The Indomitable DrugS 03-23-2009 05:18 PM

Raven's Pass raced on both bute and lasix when he won the BC Classic for Gosden.

You can be against drugs all you want - but you'd have to be an idiot to give away an edge to the rest of the field.

"There is plenty of scientific and anecdotal evidence suggesting that breeding for the marketplace rather than the racetrack and relying too heavily on medications have put thoroughbreds at risk. Still, no consistent rules for breeding or medications have been put in place across the nation."

Where exactly is this evidence? This is another example of an opinion piece sold as news or factual material.

Mafaaz may run "drug free" but since he has run a grand total of three times he is hardly the model horse to use.

He dropped the Winstrol during the TC, either post Derby or Preakness.

sorry, I did some fixing-up to their quote and didn't credit it.

The actual quote from the article was an unfair/uninformed comparison of Brown's Belmont, to baseball players who declined when the steroid scandal hit baseball.

Not exactly
He said they were stopping after the Preakness.

Dont believe everything you read or RD says.

The Indomitable DrugS 03-23-2009 09:08 PM

I believe you have it wrong - I think he said they were stopped before the Preakness .. meaning he didn't get his May 15th injection.

However, I'm told I accidently said Theregoesjojo was sired by Bernstein today on the radio ... what are the odds of us two blowhards both being wrong about something on the same day? 5K-to-1?

If his lips are moving, he's probably lying. When I saw him in NY he sure looked far less than the robust beast of the FLA Derby. Of course, I'm sure the Derby/Preakness schedule took some toll but, yikes!

sumitas 03-24-2009 10:29 AM

imo it's a good article with many valid observations . Horse racing, in general , with it's lack of regulation from the top down, is too similar to Wall Street and AIG . This comment is in general terms about the lack of a regulatory structure .

his credibilty goes out the door with his opening sentence. and could someone explain why barbaro is mentioned in paragraph two? what, the new theory is he took a bad step because of drugs? eight belles was tested post race, and nothing untoward showed up-she stumbled when changing leads in the gallop out-pine island suffered the same fate in the same way. does giving lasix affect how a horse changes leads?
and does mr. drape know that most euros grab a vet immediately after landing to get the same drugs we use here?
