Question to DTers: 'gmail' users?

Quick survey of regular DTers.. Am toying with blocking registrations with gmail.com addresses as the vast majority (99.5%) are spam type sign-ups.

We have cut down considerably on the 100-125 phony registrations daily by blocking mail.ru, gawab.com and similar International addresses, but gmail.com accounts for a good 50% as well.

Those with gmail.com addresses already would not be affected. It would only block attempts at NEW registrants.

Just curious who is actually using gmail... Additionally, it has a very bad reputation overall for pegging users for targeted spam, etc.

Thoughts?

Is there a CAPTCHA or similar on your registration page?

I use gmail... eventhough I think i registered here with my old yahoo account.

I dont get any spam mail at my gmail account (get like 100 spams a day at the old yahoo account). It has a cool chat feature that is nice... I dont mind it!

Whats G?

I use yahoo and gmail but I registered here under yahoo. And like Lori I get far less spam on gmail. I'm a mod on another forum where we've been getting bombarded with spam registrations as well. I just google the email address and the IP and you'll quickly catch the spammers since there are so many sites out there tracking them. You may have too much volume for that to be practical though. Not sure if when they sign up it gives you the location of their IP but I've found about 99% of the spam registrations come from overseas.

They're usually pretty good about catching spam, there must be a loophole where the value is stored somewhere and the site scrapers are grabbing it.

I use gmail exclusively because I hardly ever get spam mail. In fact I don't think I can't recall ever getting any...

it's not that the gmail account holders get spam... unfortunately, most spammers have switched from aol or hotmail to gmail, so a bunch of the spam mails come from bogus gmail accounts.

XIIPointStables 02-27-2009 05:56 PM

I use email and am a fan.

ditto

zippyneedsawin 02-27-2009 07:00 PM

I have a gmail account. It's not my primary email account, but I have no complaints.

ELA 02-27-2009 08:36 PM

I have a gmail account. Not my primary. Seems to work well. No spam.

BUT -- who can tell me how to turn off that conversation view in the inbox?

Thanks.

Eric

I use GMail and love it.

Suffolk Shippers 02-27-2009 11:11 PM

I use gmail as my primary. Leaps and bounds better than any email I've had previously, especially with spam.

gmail is huge out here in the Bay Area. I've never heard about the spamming issues. I only keep my Yahoo addresses since I don't want to go through the trouble of changing stuff and notifying people and developing new internet habits.

FWIW, I make an effort to use the buttons to let Yahoo know if a "spam" hits my main inbox. Yahoo of course makes an effort to identify spam and route to "spam." Every time I've let them know, the spam problem from that sender went away. So long as the spam lands in "spam," to me it's a non-issue.
