I'm (for sure) ignorant about this here. Why are they saying Varitek would have made 11 mil this year(if he had accepted arbitration?)

This is purely a guess, but if he accepted arbitration he probably couldn't make less than he did last season (which was 10 million). Maybe the Sox would have settled giving him a 10% raise (11 million) then risk Varitek winning the case (which he probably had no shot of) or winning a judgement that would have costed the Sox more than the 11 million dollar figure.

How can you be guaranteed like 10 or 11 mil if ya hit like .220? I think he's worth 5 mil/year to other teams, and 5-7 mil to the Redsox.
