this is one reason I don't like Beyers Speed Figures

The reason I know this is I am connected to the horse in Question. Skipadate who is racing in the Delta Jackpot on Friday Night.
Prior to the BC Juvenile Turf Skipadate ran a very gutsy 2nd in the Grade 3 Summer Stakes at Woodbine where he recieved a 94 Beyer 3 weeks Pass and Skipadate runs poorly in the BC Juvy Turf.

Now I look at the pp's for Friday's Delta Jackpot and I see His Beyer number from the Grade 3 Summer has been lowered to 83. To me that is a complete joke.

I can almost guarantee you if he had won the BC Juvie turf that number would have never changed from a 94 to an 83.

And What about the Betting Public on Breeders Cup Day, I am sure there were plenty of people out there that Bet on Skipadate just because he had ran a 95 beyer and had shown an increase in his figure from his 3 starts.

Maybe they should get some sort of refund on there bet.

Plus how many times does this same thing happen without the betting public even knowing there was a change whether it's 5,10 or 15 point increase or decrease in a horses figure. LIke I said earlier I noticed this right away because I am Connected with Skipadate.

Agree

Good Post. When a "good" horse wins it gets a high speed figure, when a longshot wins, it has to win again before they will raise it up. Good horses do run slow times and their Beyers are always inflated. Curlin is a good horse, but I don't thin he ran a 111 everytime he steppe on the track this year.

Skipadate got a beyer of 80 in his race before the Summer stakes where he finished 2nd and got a 94. Grand Adventure got an 80 in his race before the Summer stakes where he beat Skipadate a nose and got a 94. Starofdavid got a beyer of 63 and finished 3rd by five in the Summer Stakes where he got a beyer of 83. so the 1st and 2nd place beyers improved 14 points from their last start and 3rd places beyer improved 20 points from his last start. If a bettor bet any horse in the bc 2yo turf cuz of those inflated beyers alone - they prob deserved to lose. hard to blame the guy making em for correcting a probable mistake. even after the fact. just my imo.

Figures are not objective, they are just an educated assessment.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over them.

Dr I understand what you are saying but I would be willing to bet that if skipadate or Grand adventure Would have won the BC Juvy Turf that 94 Beyer would not have changed.

Dr. Watson 12-04-2008 07:58 PM

yep. cause the figure maker would not feel like he blundered and would instead feel as though he got it right.

computer made ones are objective. the problem with those can be that any track superintendant can change the speed of any track at his or her whim.
