Question: Kentucky Tavern Derby Winner; series history?
Just a quick personal question.
Anyone know when the Kentucky Tavern Kentucky Derby mirror series began? I've found as early as the mid-1980's, but haven't seen any earlier with cursory efforts. Apparently Kentucky Tavern is now owned by Constellation Brands, and their corporate website offers a cold "check your library" type response on any historical questions of brands they have acquired. I've looked a bit further on the internet with no luck to date. I love the series, and have a couple hanging in my sports viewing/computer/library/movie "TGI Fridays" room. Just wondering if it's worth any effort to go looking for mirrors earlier than the mid-1980's. Thanks in advance. |
Thanks for all the looks everyone.
I'm guessing after further research that the series started mid-1980's....though not certain. If you've never seen a Kentucky Tavern Derby commemorative mirror....and like displaying miscellaneous thoroughbred stuff......do a quick google gander. Listings on ebay and Craigslist for them seem to happen in spurts. |
I was checking things out on ebay and found the KY Tavern mirrow from the 110th Derby when Swale won (http://cgi.ebay.com/SWALE-HORSE-RACI...%7C240%3A1318). Have you found any earlier than this one?

Thanks DerbyCat.
I've noted the Swale mirror. That's the earliest I've seen, I believe. I have the 1986 Ferdinand, with Shoemaker up. That's the earliest I own, and probably my fave. |

They were both among my most desired, presuming the series started in the mid-1980's. Both mirrors look far better than I expected when I purchased on line. Very happy to have both. Thanks everyone, for not bidding against me. :) The nice thing about having recorded just about every Triple Crown race telecast since 1986 in full, I can go back and savor the horse and race as I enjoy the light of the day or night reflecting in the Winner's mirror.... True confession, one of my fave things about watching the nearly 1/4 century old telecasts is seeing and remembering the commercials of the day.....and how they've aged against history. The car commercials are especially entertaining! |
