All the Queen's Horses
I thought this was a fun read.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...acehorses.html The Queen and her racehorses The Queen's reigning passion is her racehorses: she worries when they are injured and leaps in the air when they win. Andrew Alderson has the inside track By Andrew Alderson, Chief Reporter Last Updated: 1:52AM BST 19 Oct 2008 It is an anecdote that says everything about the Queen's love of her horses. Last month, Full Toss, one of Her Majesty's most promising racehorses, was injured at Newbury racetrack. She was distressed to learn that the two-year-old's knee injury was so serious that there was a debate about whether the horse should be put down. The vet advised that Full Toss might not come around after surgery and that he should, perhaps, be humanely destroyed. The Queen was having none of it. In a conversation with John Warren, her bloodstock and racing adviser, she said: "No, we have to keep him alive if we can. We must give him a chance." Eventually, her decision was vindicated: the operation was a success, and Full Toss is now on the road to recovery. "It was so typical of the Queen," says Mr Warren. "The welfare of Her Majesty's horses always comes first. She wanted to know how the horse was when he went into surgery, and again when he came out. I could ring Her Majesty at any time – day or night – to update her on the welfare of her horses." Certainly, no one who was present in the royal box at Ascot back in June, when another of her favourites, Free Agent, raced on the last day of this year's meeting, will doubt the Queen's passion for either her horses or horse-racing. As Free Agent came into the final three furlongs of the Chesham Stakes, he was last of 11 runners. Those sitting near Her Majesty feared he had no chance of winning. Mr Warren takes up the story: "The Queen had Prince Philip on one side and I was on the other. I thought the jockey had run up behind a wall of horses. But when he pulled the horse out, Free Agent flew and won the race very nicely. The Queen literally jumped up in the air she was so excited. It was a moment of real joy." "The Queen is 82 years of age and yet she raced to the paddock like she was 20. We were struggling to keep up with her. The jockey was trying to explain what had happened but all the Queen wanted to do was touch her horse." It was Her Majesty's first victory at Royal Ascot for nine years. But, as Mr Warren explains during a visit to the Newmarket stables of Sir Michael Stoute, one of the Queen's five trainers, she also gains great enjoyment when her friends win races. Mr Warren remembers the occasion in 2005, when Motivator, a horse he bought for a syndicate, won the Derby. "We watched the race in the royal box and my wife, Carolyn, screamed so loudly that her choker burst. There were pearls absolutely everywhere. It was bedlam but the Queen was thrilled, while Prince Philip was helping to pick up pearls from the floor." The highlight of next year's racing calendar may well be the Derby, which a handful of the Queen's talented two-year-old colts have a real chance of winning. It is 19 years since Her Majesty last had a runner in the prestigious race; any one of her horses being nurtured by Mr Warren, including Free Agent, Four Winds or Harvest Song, could be first past the post. The son of a storekeeper from Harlow in Essex, Mr Warren, 52, is married to Lady Carolyn Herbert, with whom he has three children. He has been the Queen's bloodstock and racing adviser since 2001, when he succeeded his late father-in-law, the Earl of Carnarvon. He gives her guidance on breeding and the races that her horses should run in – but the Queen herself makes the final decisions. Charming and courteous, Mr Warren describes the Queen affectionately as "a creature of habit". Every July, she goes to the Royal Stud at Sandringham in Norfolk, armed with her old-fashioned camera to see her 20 or so mares with their new foals. "This year I said, 'Ma'am, use my camera'," recalls Mr Warren. "But the Queen still can't get used to looking at a digital screen. Her Majesty tried taking a picture with my camera, but it wasn't for her – she loves her routine." Every spring the Queen visits her trainers' stables – typically, she has 20 Flat horses in training every year – and sees her yearlings at the Hampshire stud where they are reared. "Her Majesty closely follows their development," says Mr Warren. While she never bets on her own horses – "Her Majesty's gamble is on the breeding, using this stallion with that mare, hoping to produce something special," he says – the Queen does enjoy a sweepstake: "On Derby Day, there's one in the royal box, and everyone puts in a pound." The winner gets about £16. Even though she never has a flutter, the Queen reads the Racing Post over breakfast every morning. When one of her horses is preparing to race, Mr Warren will speak to her virtually every day to update her on its progress. "If the Queen wasn't the Queen, she would have made a wonderful trainer," he says. "She has such an affinity with horses and is so perceptive." The Queen inherited a string of racehorses when her father, George VI, died in 1952. All her winners have raced in her famous royal colours of purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves and black velvet hat with gold fringe. In her coronation year of 1953, her horse Aureole was second in the Derby. Since then, she has won all five Classics except the Derby. Most famously, she won the Oaks in 1977, her Silver Jubilee year, with Dunfermline. Mr Warren admits that, while it is exciting that the Queen has so many young horses with prospects, any future victories will be hard-fought. Over the last two decades, all British racehorse owners have faced unprecedented competition from billionaire Arab and Irish owners, some of whom often own hundreds of horses and who breed some 200 foals every year. "Everyone is willing the Queen to win the Derby," he says, "but Her Majesty is so wonderfully realistic. There are probably 16 runners in the race in a given year, and perhaps 15,000 horses in training. Even to have a runner in the Derby is a remarkable achievement. "I am sure it would be one of the greatest pleasures the Queen could ever have. But I know she would never sit there and ask: 'How can we win it?' Her Majesty lets fate take its course – and accepts what happens. When it comes to horses, she always looks forward and never dwells on the past. She is never melancholy. Instead, she is very level, accepting and straightforward – I suppose that is what has made her such an amazing monarch." |

Nicky Henderson charged over test failure of Queen's horse Nicky Henderson has been summoned to appear before the British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary committee in June after a horse belonging to the Queen failed a dope test. By Marcus Armytage Last Updated: 9:54AM BST 08 May 2009 Hot Water: Nicky Henderson has been called to explain how a horse owned by the Queen failed a dope test at Huntingdon Photo: PA After his best season, it will come as a major embarrassment to the Lambourn trainer. The horse, Moonlit Path, finished sixth at 16-1 on her racecourse debut at Huntingdon, on Feb 19. The Queen's mare has tested positive to the presence of tranexamic acid, a prohibited substance. The drug is used in humans, under the name of Cyclokapron, to treat or prevent bleeding and is a permitted raceday medication in some states in America to prevent horses breaking blood vessels. Henderson has been charged with a breach of Rule 53 and Rule 200 in that he "allowed or caused to be administered, or connived at the administration of tranexamic acid with the intention of affecting her raceday performance." In a statement Henderson said: "Unfortunately Moonlit Path tested positive for a prohibited substance. The substance concerned was administered by my vet entirely in the interests of the horse's welfare, which is always paramount. There was no intention to enhance performance and it is worth pointing out that we won the race in question with the odds-on Ravello Bay." Though the most stringent penalty for a severe breach of these rules is a year's suspension, a stiff fine would appear to be the most likely outcome. |
This has never happened before.

I'll stick with Carlton House. A bit worried about his little injury problem during the week, but they wouldn't run him if he wasn't fit. I think he'll be hard to beat.
