i heard the sad news on espn radio on my way home from work. she was one of a kind for sure.

and now this makes alysheba the oldest living winner at 24.

"The farm said Genuine Risk died peacefully shortly after being turned out in her paddock"

Just curious, what does this actually mean?

I'm normally, and in fact always, a horse racing sentimentalist.

That said, my personal first memory of Genuine Risk is that I had double digit money across the board on her in her Kentucky Derby win. I don't bet "across the board" anymore, but in that instance it worked out pretty well.

I'm very sorry to hear of her passing, but very happy to realize she lived across four decades.

it means they took her from the stable to her paddock, and she died shortly after. turned out means taken outside.

yeah, she was double digit odds-13-1 i think. not only was she the first filly to win the derby in decades, she was the first to make the attempt in about 20 years. her seconds in the preakness and belmont were dammed good too--i always felt she'd have won in md had the race been cleanly run.

Does anyone know who was the oldest living Derby winner ever in the modern era? If so, how old?

westcoastinvader 08-20-2008 10:29 PM

I'm on Seattle Slew, without looking it up.

This is a weird question.

It can be construed a few ways.

Are you asking which derby winner that is still alive is the oldest?

Are you asking that in the modern era, what's the oldest age a derby winner made it too before dying?

Or are you asking how old the oldest horse was when he/she won the derby?

Gee. Seattle Slew died younger than Genuine Risk ... He was 28, she was 31 ...
Count Fleet at 33or 34 might have been the oldest ....

Well put.

My common denominator for Seattle Slew and Genuine Risk is that I had bets on each of their Kentucky Derby wins.

That means I'm old and might be absent minded on occasion..

:)
