So, These Owners Spend A Million Dollars

On a horse at auction. What % -

- in it for the fun

- in it for the chance of profit from breeding

- couple with the above or not - chance for a Derby horse

- tax write off

- ego trip

I'm on a combo of the first three. Personally feelings speaking, of course.

If someone has a million to spend on a horse, there are other ways to find tax write offs.

On the "ego trip" part, I just quickly think of horse owners George Steinbrenner, MC Hammer, Merv Griffin, Burt Bacharach, and Bob and Beverly Lewis.

I don't think any of that assorted group was on an ego trip with thoroughbred racing as the vehicle.

I think the common denominator was fun and the chance for a storied horse.

Tough question to answer. Here's one owner's reasons for being in the business: http://marylandthoroughbred.com/mida..._08/august.htm
