Wagering down 11% since Triple Crown

Pick a reason why. You'll probably be right.

Economy is not good. Simple as that. A ton of gambling money is simply going into the pockets of oil companies. If you have to pay more to fill up your tank it comes out of things like gambling dollars. People still gamble, just not as much.

Throw in the worst group of 3yr olds and older horses ever assembled and there isn't much reason to watch horse racing right now.

When does football season start?

Hopefully some star 2yr olds will emerge at Saratoga. Tough to get excited for the Travers or Whitney with the projected fields.

The race of the meet at Saratoga should be the Forego if Fabulous Strike and Benny the Bull both show up.

Too many racetracks = short fields and turf sprints.

warren t took the day off..

i agree, it's the economy. all discretionary spending is down. people switch to reg unleaded when they used to buy mid or premium, generic is selling better than it did vs name brand, organic merchandise has seen a drop. we've been here before, and we'll be there again. it happens.

Antitrust32 07-22-2008 03:26 PM

so it has nothing to do with the account wagering bullcrap... its just the economy?

You mean you won't be holding your breath to see if A.P. Arrow can actually win?

Wasn't the economy bad before the Belmont?

Do horseplayers really shop generic?

Do horseplayers even shop?

pgardn 07-22-2008 03:36 PM

11 % down from not close to where it should be...

is not so bad.

I think it is totally that. Calder is down like 72% or something ridiculous. I'm sure Churchill is way down. I've stopped playing on weekends this summer like I normally do cause I hate getting on my account seeing a race I want to bet and then being unable to. I have to imagine there are others with similar frustration. Let's see how the Saratoga meet does before blaming it all on the economy. Less people taking vacations will mean more people sitting at home playing the races.

yeah, that could be a factor.

but i'd expect any business that isn't a necessity will see a drop right now.

i think people are feeling less sure than they were a month ago. so yeah, you can see that there would be changes.
as for generic, organic, etc., that's stuff i've seen lately in stories about people altering their buying habits.

Where do you think people magically get the extra $3,000-4,000 a year for food, gas, and heating fuel? Just pull it out of the air, or is it that great $600 stimulus check that that clown gave everyone.

Thank George for giving me $600 in government tax money so I can redistribute it to his oil friends.

I am sure the guys at Sallee are loving this brilliant President's energy policy as they sacrifice food for fuel costs.

Danzig 07-22-2008 06:36 PM

actually, he asked for a package, and congress gave him one. their rating is lower than his-we seem to have a lot of scorn right now for all our elected officials, and with good reason.
each side wants to point at the other, playing the blame game while trying to take credit when something, anything, goes right.
but it's been that way since 1800, i don't see it changing any time soon!

Bobby Fischer 07-22-2008 11:31 PM

economy

I had to stop betting MILLIONS for a while

hi_im_god 07-22-2008 11:49 PM

derby trail posts related to politics are up 105% from the same period in 2007.

i blame global warming.

jpops757 07-23-2008 05:02 AM

While the economy has a big affect the 11% could easly be attributed to the TVG,HRTv,Youbet and twinspires mess.Anoter shot in the foot and getting closer to fatal. Another example of the industry needing some type of national controls. Even with the downturn in the economy it looks like the wagering dollar is out ther but the limiting of the wagering outlets is the bigger problem. The sad thing is this can be fixed with a little cooperation even with the downturn in the economy.
