Del Mar 2nd race mishap?

Anyone know what happened in the 2nd at Del Mar today?

Just watching the replay on calracing.com and saw jockey R. Jaime on #5 Esroh hit the track in a heap. The camera came quickly off as the horses passed, but I did not see any movement in the flash that he was on the screen.

He did not appear to be stepped on.

Esroh ran on, but it was unclear if he was injured. It seemed like he took a misstep forwards to unseat the jockey.

The head on replay was not available.

I didn't see the race but heard it was horrific to watch..... I won't be checking the replay.

Rest in peace Esroh and Bonus Pack.

A friend of mine who works at Del Mar told me the horse broke both cannon bones.

Really ugly

Moodwalker and Miss Storm Cat....thanks for the information, though it was not good.....

I missed anything wrong with Bonus Pack on the replay. I think I saw someone (Eurobounce?) mentioned earlier today Bonus Pack was an older horse. I guess after the 3rd place finish, something happened or became evident after the finish line.

"did not return to be unsaddled" was the say more with less "word bite" in the summary chart.

Whats the count up to now of horses breaking down or being vanned off at Del Mar? It seems like every day there is at least one horse....very sad

Apparently so. Vanned off after the finish say the charts.

Irony, Bonus Pack was claimed in the race.

I'm no trainer or owner or any behind the scene track person but I had a feeling something wasn't right about Bonus Pack being entered in this race and now I think I'm upset. On paper (DRF pp's), this horse looked suspicious being in this race. His BSF's were the best by far, he was dropping considerably and he hadn't had a work since his last race (on 7/2, he was leading by a half at the top of the stretch and lost by 8.75 and finished 6th) -- simply, he didn't belong in this race. It appeared he was dropped to be claimed. I'm not saying the trainer knew he was hurt but it all looks real suspicious. I feel sorry for the person who claimed him today. But more importantly, I feel sorry for the horse and the people who cared about him.

I only know as much about the "inside" of racing as a lifelong true fan of watching and betting the sport would know.

But my first thought is that Del Mar would be an attractive place to put a horse in a claiming race, if the connections were hoping for a claim. Highly visible social scene, and all.

True story, I was once approached on the street in Saratoga (actually in a parking lot) by someone who was trying to sell me 1/2 interest in a 3 year old filly yet to step on a track.

I guess I looked like a wannabe horse owner sucker.

What's that old saying... "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
