Walk to school?

Watch this short clip about rising fuel costs of busing kids to school. Cities and towns are looking at cutting out bus routes...maybe this will help with childhood obesity ;) http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=777238858&play=1

How far did you walk to junior or senior high school when you were young? I Mapquested it today and:

In junior high I had to walk 1.35 miles each way. In high school I was 2.76 each way so I had to bus.

Walked 15 minutes or hitch hiked. The latter was a great way to get around back then and if not for all the looneys we could save a bundle of money on gasthat way. In Jr. High I hitch hiked all over the city and was my first mode of transportation to the track. I never had one bad experience except the time a van passed and someone stuck there hand out the window as it went by at 30 mph. I though it would be fun to slap it as it went by :zz: ...bad move and it hurt like hell!

One I even got picked up in a Rolls Royce.

Yes, I am old and you are young.....

I walked 15 miles in knee deep snow while being
attacked by muskrats.

The kids I teach would get killed if they tried to
walk or bike to school in today's city.
Way too many cars going too fast.

I walked and rode my bike. 2 miles to elementary.
3 miles to Middle (Junior HIgh) School (all one way). High school
I got rides with others in cars. The big diff. we went
in groups and neighborhood kids all knew each other.
And there was no significant traffic.

Transportation via bus is a huge cost for our school
district. Finding drivers was the hardest part. Now we
will have to double load some of these buses with
kids from elementary, middle and high school. Could
be more bullying going on. Kids will have to get up
earlier, wait longer to get to school. Then when they arrive
the High school kids will be very early on some routes.

Pa took us to school in our covered wagon.

Later we had to walk after we were forced to eat the oxen due to the harsh winter.

I lived within a mile radius of my junior and senior high school so I walked for 7 years...not sure of the distance as I cut through the woods, but about a half mile....always fun in VT winter.

k-2nd was about a mile walk. Not far, but we had to take old stairs that went for about 50' through a wooded area, cross railroad tracks and the main street of the town.
My guess, our my parents never thought twice about letting little kids venture on their own. No way it would happen nowadays.

them we moved to the 'burbs and those awful bus rides.:(
