Jim McKay is dead

Jim McKay, the great friend of the horse business died today. Too bad, he would have enjoyed the Belmont.

Here he is talking to bailey after the most exciting kentucky derby ever.

he heard casino drive was out..thats all it took....

oh wow, jim mckay. the voice of racing (as well as so many other sports-his olympic coverage was always impeccable) for so long-he was fantastic at that job, and left huge shoes to fill. imo they have not been filled. he also did tons for racing in maryland, maryland millions was his brainchild. seemed like a very sweet guy, devoted to his wife and family. he's been missed all these years since his retirement. my condolences to his family.

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

Loved the barrel jumping...

RIP to a huge part of my pre-cable tv sporting life.

Wow....

That's sad, what a great broadcaster. He will be missed, but what a terrific body of work he's left behind. RIP

Show a little respect. He was a really nice man. One of my few brushes with fame and he was very down to earth.

He was the recipient of the Eclipse Award of Merit and a million other horse racing awards.

Lighten up. This is a message board, not his wake.

same here. ABC Wide World of Sports was the greatest thing going back then.

The word legend can be applied to very, very few people. He was a sports broadcasting legend. He broadcast everything and went everywhere.

even sadder day for maryland racing.

This starts the day out on a damper for me. I was already in a foul mood about Casino Drive and then this. What a gentleman. RIP Jim.

I've been watching thoroughbred racing events on television since nearly the beginning.

I can truthfully say my favorite events were those with Jim McKay present.

He displayed a complete feeling for the moment, as a journalist and as a fan.

His narration on the "Jewels of the Triple Crown" is one of my all time favorites. Pending this afternoon's race, it remains a complete body of work...

Jack Whitaker was another great part of that broadcast team. guys that really were into the sport.

Bigsmc 06-07-2008 12:26 PM

HBO had an awesome documentary on Jim McKay in the last year or two (memory is shot). It showed a bunch of Wide World of Sports stuff as well as the tragic Munich Olympics hostage crisis that made him a mainstream (not just sports) star. Also, great stories told by Jim to go along with the footage.

Here's hoping they revive it so I can put it on a DVD.
