Chuck, Have you seen the close-up picture of Big Brown's quarter crack? If you go to drf.com, there is a close-up of it. Then if you click on the article, the picture is much bigger so you can see it even better.

What do you think? How bad does it look in your opinion? How concerned would you be about it if it was your horse?

If Chuck had Big Brown he would only be concerned about what new house, car, and wife he was going to buy Monday.

It doesn't look fun, I can say that. But also, what do I know...Interesting to hear what Sir Charles has to say

It isnt pretty. But that being said they have been cutting and working on it. The thing I think is interesting is the decision to leave it open and patch on Friday. The logic they have been using is sound but they do seem to be a little worried that there is more underneath which can be a problem. The "natural healing" thing is just talk for the press because there will be very little to no "healing" in a few days but it may be draining which would work in trying to keep an abcess from building up.

The connections are certainly downplaying it. That is certainly not a minor, insignificant quarter crack. That is a really bad quarter crack.

That's not to say that it will necessarily bother the horse. You never know for sure. It's not an exact science. Even if it is does bother him in the race, he may still win because he may be so much the best that even if he regresses by 5 lengths he may still win.

Win or lose, I would certainly think that BB will be retired because that quarter crack looks like it needs to be cut out and it would take about 6 months for that hoof to grow back. That horse would not be ready to run until next year. Do you agree?

Once it is cleaned up and there is no infection it should be fine. If they can get some healing around the coronet band and the foot starts growing out it can be no problem especially in the summer when the feet grow so quickly. Then again it may be really deep and there may be a lot more to cut out. It is just so hard to predict if you are on top of them every day let alone trying to interpret one picture. The real bitch is when you do everything right and take the time to grow the foot out and they pop another one. Makes you sick

I see quarter Cracks now and then due to the Number of horses we deal with and what I can see from that picture it does not look to be very big at all. It looks to me that there are only a couple of laces in his foot if that is true it is not a very big.

I am dealing with one right now that has 7 laces in it now thats a big one.
And it looks to be in the sam place BB's is. THe colt of ours was never lame on it. The biggest thing like Chuck said we had to wait a little while to patch it to make sure that it was good and dried out.
