Tale of Ekati work or misprint

Was this an actual work this morning at Belmont? Could he have possibly gone that slow for 6f?

TALE OF EKATI (KY) 1:18.97 b

Yes he did and Barclay Tagg was not happy.

"I don't know how a world-class rider can go out there and work [a horse] in 1:18 - I just don't know," said Tagg, who added he was so upset that he didn't talk to Coa after the move. "I told him go in 1:12."

Maybe Coa was thinking of Funny Cide's run off 57 a few days before the Belmont and decided to train TOE himself?

Danzig 05-26-2008 07:23 PM

is coa really a world class rider??

I dont see why Tagg is so upset. Its not like he was capable of going much faster.

I would guess not in your eyes. Perhaps it's in the eye of the beholder. In this case I am sure Tagg was looking for ammunition.

lol
no, i don't know if he is or not, which is why i asked...but you'd think if he was world class, he'd get closer to what the trainer wanted then that.

I hate the he said she said nonsense. However, IMO, Tagg is an excellent trainer, a very sharp horseman. Coa is a top jock. That being said, from what I gather, the track was dry, heavy, deep, etc. (all the words I heard from various people) after the break. Coa had said the horse was on the wrong lead, started finished wrong, wasn't his usual self, etc. I didn't ask Coa about it myself, but, regardless Coa has a good clock and knows better.

I would think he made a judgement call -- either pull him up or go on? If you go on, hope the colt gets right. He's a pro. You are not talking about some rookie. Something must have been going on.

That is hilarious. This from the guy that was upset about a fifth of a second too fast for Big Truck's work. That would have made a great episode of Punk''d!

Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner BIG TRUCK (Hook and Ladder) breezed four furlongs in :48 4/5 on Keeneland's Polytrack on Tuesday in preparation for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 3 at Churchill Downs. Trainer Barclay Tagg described the move as a "maintenance work." It ranked eighth out of 43 works at the distance.

"He went a little faster that I wanted, but it's fine," Tagg said. "I generally like their maintenance works to be around :49, but it's no problem."

hockey2315 05-26-2008 08:12 PM

Tagg has more problems with workouts/complains about more workout times than any other trainer on earth. . .

Quiet Chris 05-26-2008 08:33 PM

I have seen works off by as much as a second but 6 seconds?

Alan07 05-26-2008 08:42 PM

We may see a jock change

I just got the call from Tagg. Kent D's wife and her implants are already booked. I'll be riding Tale of Ekati. Do you guys think it will be okay if I use a western saddle?? I forgot to ask Barclay.
