wow, in the space of 2 days Storm Cat and Sadlers Wells. Happy retirements fellas..

blackthroatedwind 05-13-2008 04:05 PM

Storm Cat was one of my favorite horses. I remember being at the Meadowlands when he beat Danzig Connection in the Young American.

They are right about how he looks. I saw him at Overbrook Farm last October and he looked great for his age.

In a "how the game has changed" trivia question, who trained the first two finishers in the 1985 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (and what be the odds that they would accomplish that feat in today's game)?

I feel like Drysdale trained Tasso and, of course, Sheppard trained Storm Cat.

FGFan 05-13-2008 04:13 PM

Just heard Steve talking about this on the show.
He is one of my favorites too.
I'm sad there won't be anymore Storm Cats after these foals, but glad for him, hope he has a long happy retirement on the farm.
I'm so mad at myself now..they had a storm cat halter for auction at the fundraiser at the Fairgrounds for EJ Perrodin. Dallas Stewart and David Carroll got into a bidding war and I conceded, with I hadn't now.

Your feel is correct.

blackthroatedwind 05-13-2008 04:22 PM

I wonder if Sheppard ever had another 2YO in the BC. And, other than the steeplechase race, I wonder how many BC starters he ever had.

Storm Cat lost that Juvenile by one of the dirtiest noses ever. That was a brutal beat. Tasso turned out to be nothing. He was placed second, behind Mogambo, in the Gotham the next spring. Here's a trivia question.....who got DQ'd from second? Turned out to be a VERY good horse.

With all the talk of Native Dancer inbreeding of late and its potential effect on the fragility of the breed, it's interesting to see two such prominent Northern Dancer line sires retired in two days.

Groovy of course. Groovy didn't get VERY good until Martin took over and kept him in sprints.

The end of an era, altho both storm cat and sadler's wells still have a few crops left to hit the track. storm cat isn't quite the best this continent has ever seen, but sadler's wells was an amazing stallion, and a legend in his own time. amazing what northern dancer accomplished-a very good racehorse who became a fabulous sire, and then sired the top (ever?) euro stud, and sired the top north american stallion by stakes winners in danzig-who in turn sired the only stallion to really give sadler's wells a run in europe, the too soon lost danehill.

According to BC site, his only other starters were With Anticipation in 2001 and 2002 Turf (second) and Alice Springs in 1994 and 1995.
