Frank Whiteley passing (Forego, Ruffian, Damascus)

Whiteley Jr., 93, Hall of Fame trainer of thoroughbred champions Tom Rolfe, Damascus, Forego (for two years), and the great filly Ruffian, died May 2, 2008, in Camden, South Carolina. He is survived by sons, David (and Sharon Austin) Whiteley and Alan (and Sharon) Whiteley. Frank Whiteley was the proud grandfather of Seth Whiteley, 21, a farrier, and Kyle Whiteley, 20, a sophomore at Simmons College in Boston. He is also survived by his dear friend and longtime companion, Ginny Watts. A celebration of his life will take place in Camden early in June. Details to be announced. |

It seemed like we got an interesting insight to what he was like in the movie Ruffian (If that was an accurate representation of him). How long had he be out of horse racing? |
What was amazing to me is that he didn't outlive his son, who has to be just about the most WIRED dude alive.
