known unsound influences. very risky mating and Eight Belles suffered as a result. The breeders took the money. The connections took the money. Eighyt Belles lost her life.

Just knowing she was an Unbridled's Song is enough for me. They are as fragile as glass ...

I thought it was the dirt track?

Lots of debate with this of late, is it breeding, the track, a freak accident, the jock, a filly racing against males, drugs in racing, pushing young horses too early...Even PETA has an opinion. I think the only positive that can come out of this is it has atleast sparked dialogue on examining these issues.

I blame the track mostly (looked like a freaking speedway), but having fragile legs while being a huge horse probably didn't help her cause. Either way you look at it, it was a horrible tragedy to happen. ESPECIALLY on a big day like the Derby where everyone is watching.

I wasn't blaming the track. . . just referencing one poster's affinity for poly as the cure-all for injuries. . .

I am ... and I'm not blaming it because it's dirt, but because of the way they souped it up. Churchill is normally one of the safest tracks, but when they turn it into Talladega on Derby day, they're asking for trouble.

One is one to many but how many other horses broke down at Churchill on derby day?

In one year and I hate to sound cynical, this will all be forgotten. I've seen it happen far too often. I'm not trying to be insensitive as I am very sad to have seen this happen to the Barbaro's, Go For Wand's, and the pictures shown on the backstretch of Eight Belles falling down were very disturbing. But that is the nature of the game, we will feel bad, we will remember. But this thing will past.
