this disgusts me. does a win in this give enough graded earnings to make the derby ? i hope not.

$90,000 to 1st place. Even if Hey Bern wins and gets to $140,000, he would still likely be on the outside looking in.

interesting that this race was moved so far back into calendar, and also lengthened to 1-3/16. Seems like a Preakness prep now more than anything, and winning this race won't get you into the Derby field unless you already have 40-50K in graded earnings in the bank.

SniperSB23 04-07-2008 02:11 PM

A really stupid decision to move this race.

Think this race is more of a setup for the Preakness, then it is the derby, although Gulfstream would like to think it would be for the Derby

Look at the prospective field. This race won't be setting up anything but a cheap G3 on the resume. At one mile on Donn weekend it would have drawn a very good field.

yes sir, if i recall correctly the donn card was not the greatest either.

Enough of the prep races @ GP already! That meet is way to way long.

Good looking jockey colony at Gulfstream this weekend.

slotdirt 04-09-2008 03:35 PM

Castro can ride some on occasion.

Why was Sabatian Madrid in the Dubai World Cup??? Is he good at a track we or I dont know about?

Linny 04-09-2008 08:14 PM

This race is no worse than when it was in January. It counts for graded earnings but the $90k to the winner means that the winner must already have about $100k to get into the Derby.

i couldn't disagree more.

1 1/16 in january/february was more meaningful than 1 3/16 2 weeks before the derby.

this is an ignoble tribute to the flamingo stakes.

I would love to play Nathan's Ridge, but I'm not sure if he'll be fit enough. Maybe if they had like 25 or 26 route races in him by now instead of a paltry 9, I'd be going to the window and betting with both fists.

No worse than when it was in January (or February)???

Nobiz.. Barbaro.. Closing Argument (with High Fly third).. Second of June (with Silver Wagon second).. Offlee Wild (with Funny Cide 5th).. Booklet (with Harlan's Holiday second)..

This field is no worse than these last 6 runnings?
