Money to get to the gate in KD134????

How much in graded earnings do you all think that it will take to get into the gate for KD??? Isn't it at least 200k normally??My longshot is looking more and more like he isn't even going to get there.

Usually $130,000 will do it.

if your longshot can't get the graded earnings between now and the derby then he doesn't deserve to be in the gate. There are occasionally late bloomers ( Chelokee comes to mind ) that don't get the earnings, but if you know of one this early then he should be able to get the earnings if in fact he deserves to be there.

In the last few years, it's taken $125,000 to not have to sweat it out. I'mawildandcrazyguy got in last year with less but wasn't assured of a spot until late. You have to look at newly graded races and purse increases, though, from year to year.

If we wind up with a filly in the race and any horses from overseas it could easily wind up $200,000 this year. That Delta Jackpot race alone being graded will put three extra a year in.

i believe the delta was graded last year with birdbird winning the jackpot but opting to not run in the Derby

Yeah, last year the horses on the bubble lucked out with both Birdbird and Pirates Deputy opting out even though they had the earnings. That doesn't seem likely to happen this year.

Everyone says that every year, but generally, the horses that have the $$$ but truly don't belong, don't go. I can think of a few they probably should have passed and many that with hindsight were dreadful mistakes, but AT THE TIME most of the starters in the last 10 or so Derbies were horses that belonged.
